ANU in A-NUtshell

J
8.0 /10

I chose ANU for being the too University in the country, particularly for Law and anything internationally focussed. ANU is also 1 of 2 unis in Australia to offer development studies as its own degree rather than as an art major. The location of the uni and college life also really appealed to me.

Course Curriculum :

They have since reformed my development studies degree, so I can t accurately comment on the status of that. With the law, it would be better if they added a wider range of electives e.g. more criminal, family or human rights type courses would be popular at ANU.

Internship :

Yes, both law and arts offer internships in various forms. Domestic placements do not require any financial contribution as it is covered in your university fees, which the government pays for (on loan). I did a domestic placement with a legal aid office that helps youths with legal problems, and I gained immeasurable experience and knowledge. I also did an international one, which does require some student contribution.

Fees :

Almost every domestic student puts their fees on the government loan scheme, HECS. Each subject falls into one of three bands, corresponding to the difficulty/expected income after graduation. As such, most people come out with $30,000+ of debt which you start paying incrementally when you earn $45,000. International students must pay up front. Other fees are involved for international courses, such as a semester abroad or international summer/winter courses. All have government and university funding, leaving a lesser amount for students to pay.

Examination Structure :

It depends on the course. The arts don't have many exams. With the law, the length, difficulty, and type depend on the subject. They are usually between 2-4 hours long if they are sit-down, it mongers if they are a take-home which is also common. Almost all of them are open book.

Faculty :

The College of Law does most things well, and anything that doesn't make sense can be immediately answered. The faculty is pretty well organized generally and has good links with student representative bodies to constantly improve.
