  • The Master of Law(L.L.M) is a 1-year program at the Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia(UBC).
  • This program has combined coursework and thesis option.
  • The program requires completion of 30 credits which include: 

    • LL.M. Thesis (20 credits)

    • 2 Required Courses (7-8 credits)

    • Electives (8-9 credits)

  • A student writes their thesis under the supervision of a faculty member on a subject of the student’s choosing. In most fields, a thesis is 100 to 120 pages or 25,000 to 30,000 words not including the bibliography and footnotes.
  • The thesis is evaluated by the supervisor and a second reader. The second reader is usually another member of the faculty, but may also be from faculty at UBC or another university if appropriate. 
  •  The Peter A. Allard School of Law provides a wide range of entrance scholarships and awards (subject to budgetary approval) for admitted LLM students ranging from $2,500 to $23,000. 
  •  MITACS is a federally and provincially funded organization that helps to place graduate and postgraduate students in paid internship positions.
  • The LLM is a research-intensive degree that prepares graduates for opportunities in law teaching, legal research, policy development, and public and governmental service. Applicants to the research-based LLM program go on to jobs in academia or wish to complete advance research in specific areas of law.

Academic Eligibility:

  • The Student must have a bachelor's degree with 76% marks or a GPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale.

Exam Requirements:

  • GRE is not required but the scores are considered.
  • TOEFL or IELTS is mandatory for students whose official language is not English.

Indian Student Requirements:

  • A four-year Bachelor's Degree or a Master's degree.
  • The bachelor’s degree with 65% marks or 8 on a 10-point scale.
  • Students required a bachelor's degree in Law.

VISA & Work Study

VISA

  • The Student visa is a document that the Canadian government issues that allow foreign nationals to study at institutions in Canada.
  • A student visa is required to study in Canada. 
  • The cost of the Student visa is 112 USD.
  • A Student visa is usually valid for the length of the student’s study program, plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days lets the student prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend their stay.

Can I use MBA to apply for master of science in finance or Business Administration?

To apply for the M.Sc Finance program of UBC you must have a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last two years of study. You must also have at least studied one calculus course and one linear algebra course. International students must submit a valid ELP test score. GMAT score of 550 is preferred. For the M.Sc Business Administration program the admission requirements vary depending on the student’s educational background, work experience, and other factors.
