April 30: NTA may reduce the syllabus for NEET-UG Entrance Test by 30% for the session of 2021. 

Armed Forces Medical College, also known as AFMC, was established in 1948 in Pune, Maharashtra. It has the distinction of being the very first medical college set up and run by the Armed Forces of any country in Asia.  AFMC was initially affiliated to the University of Pune till 1999 and is presently affiliated Maharashtra University of Health and Sciences and is recognized by the Medical Council of India.

Started initially as a postgraduate teaching institution after world war II, the institution now teaches and trains medical undergraduates and postgraduate, nursing undergraduates and postgraduates, dental postgraduates and paramedics. AFMC has a total of twenty-nine departments at present.

The institute offers two UG courses - MBBS and B.Sc. nursing. As PG courses, the college offers various specializations with MD and MD/MS degrees, along with M.Sc. degree in Anatomy and Master’s degree in Hospital Administration. 

Other than the UG and PG courses, the college also offers PG Diploma courses as well as a number of Super speciality courses.

Admissions in all departments are done solely based on the marks scored in the National Entrance Eligibility Test – NEET (formerly AIPMT) and the subsequent interview.

Application procedure for the UG courses starts in the month of April. For Super speciality and Postgraduate courses, applications are invited in the month of July and September respectively. For admission to these courses, the candidate must fill up the AFMC Application Form which is available for download at the Institute’s website.

Armed Forces Medical College Courses

AMFC offers a 4 ½ year MBBS course followed by a year of internship, postgraduate courses in different domains, nursing courses, paramedical training and PhDs in different subjects. The college has a standard intake of 130 students for MBBS, of which 105 are boys and 25 are girls. The table below describes the details of some courses offered by the Armed Forces Medical College.

Eligibility: Must have passed 12th as a regular candidate with Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology with a minimum of 50% score in each subject. Candidates should also have an aggregate score of a minimum of 60% in PCB. Must correspondingly have a passing score in NEET (134 – unreserved and 107 – reserved)

BSc Nursing 
Duration: 1-3 years Speciality: Basic, Post Basic, Operation Room, Orthopedic and Rehabilitation, Oncology, Cardiothoracic, Neonatal
Eligibility: Must have passed 10+2 in the first attempt with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Should have an aggregate score of a minimum of 50%. Must also have passed the AFMC Nursing exam. Only female candidates can apply.

Eligibility: Should have claimed an MBBSand postgraduate degree in medicine from any recognized medical college. Only in-service candidates are eligible for BMPT courses offered by AFMC.

Armed Forces Medical College Admission

  • Admission to MBBS is granted on the basis of NEET-UG.
  • For B.Sc. Nursing, Candidates need to fill in the AFMC Application Form in order to sit for the AFMC entrance test. 
  • Admission to all the PG courses is done through NEET-PG and the application process starts in the month of September.
  • Admission to Super Specialization programs like DM and M.Ch. is granted on the basis of NEET SS
  • Admission to Phd is done on the basis of the entrance exam conducted by AFMC.
  • Admission to BPMT and Technical Trade Training courses will be Merit-based followed by Scores obtained in the AFMC Entrance Exam conducted by the Institute.

How to Apply?

  • All candidates must appear for the National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) and apply for counselling.
  • To apply for NEET, students have to download the application form available in the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and fill in the details as per the instructions provided. Students must be extremely careful while applying as no changes can be made after applying and candidates are allowed to submit only one application.
  • After NEET dates are announced, students will have to apply for counselling by registering in the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) website.
  • Admissions will take place according to the score in NEET and the interview scheduled by AFMC.

Admission Procedure:

  • Admissions will take place after students register themselves for counselling during the given time window.
  • After the window closes, students will be shortlisted based on their scores in NEET and will be called for screening.
  • The screening consists of a Test of Logic and Reasoning (ToELR), Test of English Language, Psychological Assessment Test (PAT), a Comprehension Test, Medical Fitness Test followed by a Personal Interview.
  • Final selections are made based on the candidate’s NEET scores and performance in the Screening Test.
  • After selection students are required to sign a bond agreement.

Armed Forces Medical College Facilities

  • Hostel – The college has fully furnished accommodation for boys and girls. In campus, accommodation is compulsory for all students for the entire duration of their course. The college also has accommodation for all staff and students from other departments as well.
  • Library – AFMC has a huge library that has 50000 plus books. Its well-resourced bookkeeping is aimed at improving students’ knowledge and study experience. The Ashoka Chakra Library houses a huge number of medical literature and has an e-library with access to numerous international and national journals as well.
  • Laboratory – The college has completely modern equipped laboratories and dedicated lab staff. The college has a separate block for its laboratories named the Diamond Jubilee Block, that houses the microbiology, pathology, haematology and biochemistry labs.
  • Hospital – The AFMC hospital is the biggest in all of Pune spread throughout 105 acres. Initially the British Medical Hospital, it was renamed and redesigned as the Command Hospital (Southern Command) and now has over 5 departments. The hospital has no dearth of patients. 
  • Auditorium – AFMC has two huge auditoriums namely, Dhanvantari and Bharadwaj that house more than 1000 people each. 
  • Sports – Students of AFMC are encouraged to participate in sports and other extracurriculars other than studies. The college has a gym, swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and other indoor and outdoor game facilities and equipment. The college has also won many accolades in sports at the international and national level.

Ques. Does the college offer any reservations for minorities?

Ans. Out of the 130 seats offered for MBBS, the college reserves 10 seats for students from the SC/ ST/ OBC communities and 5 seats as the NRI quota.

Ans. According to the bond, students will have to do service for the army for 7 years, during which they cannot pursue higher education. To opt-out of this, students will have to pay the bond amount which is INR 25 Lakhs.
