Jagannath Barooah College was founded in the year 1930. The university offers UG & PG courses in Geography and Philosophy.  Few other post graduate courses such as Master of Arts and Masters of Commerce are also offered to students via Distance Education mode.

The college also offers Skill- based Professional Courses in Computer Applications such as PG Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) of one year & PG Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) of 3 years’ duration.

The college also plans to introduce Film Studies and Digital Film Making programme for the new academic session. if the programmes gets UGC approval then there is also an additional Tourism and Travel Management programme under this category.

For the Special CPT course, students who have completed high school from a recognized board are eligible to appear for CPT (Common Proficiency Test) to get admission in Chartered Accountancy Course. Students from any stream such as Arts, Commerce and Science are eligible to apply for this programme.

There is a provision for students to enroll for courses offered by the college via Distance Mode of Education. There are different Diploma, Degree and Certificate courses offered under IGNOU whereas BCA degree programme, Certificate and Diploma programmes are offered under K K Handique State Open University (KKSHOU).

JB college offers BA & B.Sc courses under various specializations. Students are selected on the basis of their marks in the qualifying examination. Aspirants can check the course wise eligibility criteria along with the selection procedure as listed below:

BA Economics Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 60% marks in senior secondary school. He/she should have secured 60% marks in Economics and 50% in English. Those candidates who have completed their senior secondary school in Science stream should have secured an average minimum of 55% marks in senior secondary school. He/she should have secured 45% marks in Mathematics and 45% in English.
BA English Candidate should qualify the English Major Selection Test (EMST) conducted by the university, mostly 5 days prior to the BA 1st Semester course admission commencement. EMST question paper consists of total 60 marks. For appearing in EMST, he/she must have secured an average minimum of 60% marks in senior secondary school and 70% marks in English subject. The performance weightage assigned to the eligibility criteria for a candidate to get through is 60% marks in EMST, 20% aggregate marks in senior secondary school and 20% marks in English Language as a subject in senior secondary school.
BA Geography Candidate must have secured first division in senior secondary school examination with 75% marks in Geography & 55% in English. The final selection is based upon the total marks secured to double the marks scored in Geography theory examination + marks scored in Geography practical examination in excess of 30% in the subjects select as MIL and the main subjects for Degree programme.
BA Political Science Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 60% marks in senior secondary school. He/she should have secured 60% marks in Political Science and 50% in English.
BA Assamese Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 55% marks in senior secondary school. He/she should have secured 70% marks in Assamese and 40% in English. Preference will be given to the candidates who have had studied Advance Assamese in the senior secondary school.
BA History Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 55% marks in History and 45% in English in senior secondary school examination.
BA Philosophy Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 45% marks in Logic & Philosophy and 40% in English in senior secondary school examination. The marks secured by the candidate in Logic & Philosophy will be added to the overall aggregate marks secured by him/her for the purpose of preparation of merit list.
BA Sanskrit Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 45% marks in Sanskrit and must have clearly passed in English in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Botany Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 55% marks in Biology, 40% in Chemistry and 45% marks in English in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Chemistry Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 55% marks in Biology, 40% in Chemistry and 45% marks in English in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Physics Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 60% marks in Chemistry, +40% in Mathematics in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Zoology Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 55% marks in Biology, 40% in Chemistry and 45% marks in English in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Geology Candidate must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects and should have secured an average minimum of 180 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (170 marks for those who have studied Geology in senior secondary school.
B.Sc Mathematics Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 45% marks in Mathematics in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Statistics Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 35% marks in Mathematics in senior secondary school examination.
B.Sc Biotechnology Candidate must have secured an average minimum of 50% marks in senior secondary school examination and 50% marks in Chemistry and Biology.

JB College Application Process 2023

  • The university will announce the availability of forms for the candidates wishing to seek admission in the college. He/she should duly fill in the forms correctly and submit the same before the mentioned deadline.
  • The notification for the availability of forms and last date for the submission will be issued in the local newspapers in Assam as well as the college notice board.
  • The college will form a screening committee for the purpose of scrutinizing the application forms in detail. Based on this screening procedure, the college will announce the publishing of merit list on the college’s notice boards. Along will the merit list, the college will also announce the admission dates.
  • Based on the merit list, candidate must determine the subject he/she wishes to enroll as per the mentioned dates by the college officials.
  • The college follows reservation policy as per the rules issued by the Government. Those who wish to seek admission to a reserved seat, must produce certificate/PH certificate issued by a competent authority.
