What is a BPT course?

Bachelor of Physiotherapy or BPT is a 4-year undergraduate program which deals with the science of physical movement. The course also highlights the importance of six months of mandatory clinical internship.

Those who have completed their secondary education (Class 12 or equivalent) in relevant discipline from a recognized board are eligible to apply for this course.

BPT Admission is generally fulfilled on the basis of entrance examinations conducted at national and state level like - IPU CET, BCECE, VEE, etc. However, many institutions provide direct admission to the course either on the basis of academic aggregate or first cum first serve basis.

The course curriculum for BPT covers topics related to

  • Manual Therapy
  • Exercises, and
  • Applications of the electro-physical mode of treatment

The course fee for admission to best physiotherapy colleges in India can range anywhere from INR 1 Lakh to 5 Lakhs per annum.

What is the BPT course all about?

  • Physiotherapy is a branch of healthcare that applies modes of physical movement including exercise and massage.
  • BPT course provides education, advice, and counselling services to people who are in their old age and need special treatment both physically and mentally.
  • Students enrolled in this program are taught about skills related to manual therapy, exercises, and application of electro-physical mode of treatment, which cure a variety of disabilities and disease associated with the spine, back, neck, and even stress-related problems.

  • After graduation, the physiotherapy student gets to perform many jobs related to the treatment of patients, under the direction of a trained physiotherapist.
  • There are physiotherapy career specialities in geriatrics, paediatrics, orthopaedics, neurological disorders, and sports medicine. By choosing a speciality, the student makes themself more valuable by earning a handsome salary package.

BPT Specializations

BPT Specializations

The program is designed to help a student understand the abilities and knowledge required to assess, diagnose and cure patients. Thus, rather than specializing in one area, Bachelor of Physiotherapy sheds light on all aspects of physiotherapy.

Students who are planning to specialize in a particular area are advised to further pursue a Master of Physiotherapy or MPT course. Some of the most-preferred specializations in Physiotherapy are mentioned below:

Top BPT colleges in India

Top BPT colleges in India

It is recommended to apply for a BPT degree in a college/university which is recognized by the IAP (Indian Association of Physiotherapists). There are many colleges out there which are not IAP recognized, so before you apply go through the IAP website to find out the IAP recognized colleges near you.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy can be pursued from either a government or private college. Some of the best BPT colleges in India offering this program are provided in the table given below:

NIRF Medical Rankings Name of the College Admission Process Total Fees Average Placement Offer

BPT Distance Education

As declared by the UGC (University Grant Commission) in their official notice - courses related to engineering, medicine, dental, pharmacy among several other programs which require hands-on experience are not allowed to be offered under distance learning mode. The list includes certificate, diploma and degree programs.

Although as per the UGC-DEB there is no online or distance learning option available for the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course, institutions like Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad and Jodhpur National University provide an option for BPT distance education.

Interested candidates are advised to visit Collegedunia.com for more information about the same.

BPT Syllabus: Subjects and Books

Syllabus for Bachelor of Physiotherapy include subjects that teach about human anatomy and human body movements. BPT is divided among 8 semesters and the course syllabus teaches about skills related to standard therapy, exercises, and application of electro-physical mode of treatment.

The semester-wise breakup of the syllabus is given below:

Semester I Semester II
Anatomy Biomechanics
Physiology Psychology
Biochemistry Sociology
English Orientation to Physiotherapy
Basic Nursing Integrated Seminars
Semester III Semester IV
Pathology Exercise Therapy
Microbiology Electrotherapy
Pharmacology Research Methodology & Biostatistics
First Aid & CPR Introduction to Treatment
Constitution of India Clinical Observation Posting
Semester V Semester VI
General Medicine Orthopaedics and Sports Physiotherapy
General Surgery Supervised Rotatory Clinical Training
Orthopaedics and Traumatology Allied Therapies
Semester VII Semester VIII
Neurology and neurosurgery Supervised Rotatory clinical training
Community medicine Ethics, Administration and Supervision
Neuro- Physiology Evidence-based physiotherapy and practice
Community-based Rehabilitation

Note: students in their final year are asked to present a final project and must complete 6 months of training prior to becoming a successful physiotherapist.

While one of the courses deals with dental studies the other deals with Physiotherapy. A student can attain a good career by opting any one of the courses. Therefore, one must make up their mind prior to going for any one of them.

Many medical aspirants personally prefer BDS as it basically deals with the study of dental related issues and has quite a good career opportunity both in India as well as abroad. You could even go for higher studies like MDS in the same field and can even become a surgeon if you wish to.

BPT Jobs and Scope in India

If we talk numbers, as per a 2018 survey conducted by the WHO (World Health Organization) -  there are only 5,000 qualified physiotherapists in India, while there should be one for every 10,000 citizens.

Thus, according to WHO standards we still have a shortage of about 90,000+ physiotherapists and the demand will only rise in the near future.

Looking for jobs after graduation can be a tiresome process and students often get unequal pay, but a few years of practice as a registered physiotherapist will be able to fix it. Generally, BPT graduates easily get the chance to operate in a clinic/hospital as an assistant physiotherapist.

Some of the popular professional avenues open to such graduates are mentioned below, along with the corresponding job responsibilities and average salary offered for each role.

Job Profile Job Description Average Salary (in INR)
Physiotherapist Helping patients with limited physical movements resulting from illness, injury, disability, or ageing. Improve movement and devise treatment programs using manual therapy (such as massage), therapeutic exercise, and electrotherapy. INR 2 to 7 LPA
Defence Medical Establishments Looking after the injuries sustained by army men during conflict or training. INR 6 to 10 LPA
Lecturer Teaching undergraduate and graduate-level students about certain topics related to human anatomy. INR 5 to 6 LPA
Researcher Includes working with other team members to identify project goals, research methods, and other test parameters. Researchers also offer recommendations on improving the techniques used. INR 3 to 7 LPA
Osteopath They treat patients by stimulating different areas of the body using a wide range of physical techniques such as touching, stretching, and massaging.  INR 2.5 to 5 LPA
Self Employed Private Physiotherapist They provide all physio related treatments at the patient’s doorstep. It is better to gain some experience from a hospital or clinic before starting this venture. INR 3 to 6 LPA
Sports Physio Rehabilitator They work with different Sports clubs or organisations to work on injuries of sportspersons. INR 5 to 7 LP

Due to recent awareness about physiotherapy and general health among the population, the scope of growth in this sector has increased.

With the field becoming more specific day by day, many clinics in India are starting to treat a particular speciality only. Like the centre for neurorehabilitation, centre for ortho related injuries, centre for sports physiotherapy, centre for women health, etc. Thus after completing your BPT you can think about a masters (MPT) if you want to specialise in one of the many specialities like MPT in Orthopedics, Sports, Neurology, Pediatrics, etc.

Moreover, the opportunities to earn are quite good in physiotherapy. Chances abroad are notable but one will need to clear the licensing exams of a particular country.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Course curriculum is good but improvements need to be done so as to include latest developments and more focus should be given on research facilities. The faculty is a bit disappointing, the teachers have immense knowledge but are too busy in gossip, 80% of the syllabus is self-learnt by the students. KEM has a good name but only the Faculty of Physiotherapy needs to be blamed, other depts do their job well. Of the 10 teachers in the dept, only 4 are good that too if they are in good mood.

Campus Life :

Way better than expected. Students who are interested in sports will really love the campus, we have courts for almost all the major college level sports both indoor as well as outdoor. The next best thing is our completely air conditioned library, medical journals, reference books on almost all the topics will be available here. Plus the ample space for reading or studying is massive boon. The infrastructure sorts of lessens the pain caused by the more than incompetent faculty.

College Events :

Seth GS Medical College keeps on hosting multiple academic as well as cultural events throughout the year. Be it Quiz, Talent competition, Paper presentation or Fashion shows, GSites excel in all of them. All the events lead to the Mega Medical fest called as AAVISHKAAR, a 4 day gala filled with lots of fun, competitive games and thrilling entertainment. Medicos from all over Maharashtra and India come to participate in multiple events or just to enjoy the fest.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I chose this because in kanpur it's having no.1 OPD of physiotherapy. In this faculties is good in basic terms of subjects ,like in your 1st year you would be pleased to have a best teachers ever in your life and later on it seems to be quite enough knowledgeable facilities to understand your main course subjects. The student : faculty ratio is normal level . It means you will have to keep insist yourself to learn the things and manage the topics whichever you wanna clear the doubts . Overall I would suggest you to keep indulge with teachers only so then they will give you their secret ingredient (knowledge). The faculty is of doctorate holders some of master's holder also . There is two times of exam in a year ,Half yearly in January and final exam in may -June.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There is total amount of 56,513 rupee in 1st year and there is concession of SC,ST and OBC students . There is only scholarship of govt provisional scheme states that who is financially weak can get fees of their during study of course. There is no stipend while doing Duty in OPD of self assisted by University in your 2nd ,3rd and final year . Yes the university provides 1 month clinical posting in GSVM medical college of various departments. There is neither provision of any type of job assurance nor stipend , actually you will have to do Internship from wherever you wanna do .

Placement Experience :

There is only clinical posting which is for final year students. In curriculum students should atleast achieve 50% in theory and 50 %in practical exam to pass out
