B.Tech Avionics Engineering: What is it About?

B. Tech. Avionics Engineering course is a subset degree of the Aeronautical Engineering course. It is aimed primarily at training students in the fundamentals of Electrical and Electronic systems. This is in order to allow them to specialize in Aviation Electronics (Avionics).

Alongside the core subject courses in Electronics and Computer Systems, the degree usually also involves sub-papers in Aerospace Systems, Economics, Management and Basic Sciences. This increases the scope of the course significantly.

Considered to be an integral part of Aeronautical Engineering, Avionics Engineering has been launched as its own B. Tech programme in the recent past, and is one of the fastest developing streams in the industry. It involves a study of electronics, aviation and electrical systems.

What are skills required for B.Tech.  Avionics Engineering?

In order to study Avionics Engineering under a B. Tech degree, students must have an inclination towards electronics and electrical systems. A background in Computer Science, and an affinity for Mathematics, is highly advisable. Students who opt for this course are those who are interested in pursuing a career in the fields associated with aeronautics.


Similar to most B. Tech degrees, Avionics Engineering is a 4-year course with 8 semesters. It is a course with full time study in all the institutions in India that offer it.

B. Tech. Avionics Engineering: Top Institutes

Eligibility For B. Tech. Avionics Engineering

To pursue a B. Tech degree in Avionics Engineering, a candidate must have a pass in 10+2 level study. Most institutions accept only students from the Science stream, with Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics being required subjects. Few institutions specify that Computer Science must also have been a subject of study at the +2 level.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology accepts only those with above 75% at the +2 level (65% for reserved categories). Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and two other subjects, one of which must be a language. JEE Advanced is another criterion for admission.

B. Tech. Avionics Engineering: Admission Process

There is a total of 60 seats available in the IIST Avionics Engineering course, which is considered at par with the number seen in the different institutions that offer this course, though few in number. Reservation is applicable as per the Government of India rules. The list of selected students is released through online portal based on performance in JEE Advanced.

The prominent colleges in the country who offer this degree do not allow admission without completing the prerequisite processes, i.e., there is no direct admission. The rarity of the course as well as the full-time course structure also leads to lack of lateral entry and distance education options.

Selection Process/Entrance Exam

Students wishing to pursue this degree are advised to undertake some of the primary engineering entrance examinations, as most institutions consider this performance as the basis for admissions. Some of the best programmes in this field in the country have their own admission test, such as the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Admission Test. IIT-JEE is also considered for admission in several institutions.

Applications are usually available on the respective online portals of the institutions from mid-May, for a period of around three weeks. Selection for admission depends on a number of different criteria, including eligibility, past academic performance, and performance in entrance examinations as well as competitive examinations.

B.Tech. Avionic Engineering: Syllabus and Course Description

The course in institutions such as IIST consists of a full-time course with multiple internal assessments throughout the year. The eight semesters each cover different aspects, with the first two semesters concentrating on establishing the basics.

There is a compulsory internship as part of the course in most institutions. IIST considers it to be a 3-credit course under the curriculum. The institution also helps in internship placements, offering opportunities in ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) and other such lucrative options.

Seeing your interest in both branches, IIEST has a wide scope of diverse cultures and you will find many students from all over the nation.  IIEST Shibpur offers great exposure in terms of academics as well as extra-curricular activities along with the interactive clubs and fun happening fests. It comes under the Government of India and is one of the NIT.  However, Aerospace Engineering is not a trending branch anymore and it was in the limelight a decade ago. To open up more opportunities, you will be required to pursue a Master’s or prepare for the competitive exams to get a decent job.  ECE at Heritage Institute is more prominent but being a private college, it is not up to the mark as compared to Aerospace Engineering. The placement opportunities at HIT are not good. Therefore, all you can do is to opt for IIEST, get a decent aggregate, and change the branch from Aerospace to ECE in the second year.Read more

Also, keep in mind that the IIT Madras Aerospace and Aeronautical departments of other institutes are different. Aerospace Engineering is designing, whereas Aeronautical Engineering is the maintenance of aircraft. Your life will be good in the aerospace department at the institute as it would be in any other department. Most of the IIT Aerospace students pursue masters after completing their degree. Ans. Yes, not only this year but for the last 5-6 years, MIT Aeronautical Engineering has been facing a lot of trouble in general. The primary reason is that it is one of the university departments of Anna University. In India, there are fewer core companies, and they mostly visit the IITs and NITs. Most of the students are attending IITs and NITs, which also decreases the number of students getting admission in MIT. Exams are used by public sector companies such as DRDO and ISRO to hire employees, and students had to apply after completing their undergraduate degrees. The curriculum isn't very good, in comparison to other streams. Some businesses require specialization, so they opt for P.G. There was no proper guidance from the staff. This is a major issue in the department. Campus Life :

In our batch the ratio is about 5:2, but in the recent years the ratio is gradually coming down. For extracurricular activities there are several clubs like film, astronomy, physics, music and other sports club and these clubs held their regular activities and meeting. There are also some sports activities like regular cricket and football and basketball practices and matches and also there is sports festival where irrespective of gender and regions(there are students of every religion from 26 states of India) all participate. And usually these technical competitions occur in the annual technical competition.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Our course structure almost similar to those in IITs but a little bit changed, as for example in my course with ECE major we also had to study aviation and computer science as per requirements for an ISRO scientist. For exam structure, 2 quizzes of 15 marks, and 20 internal and the rest 50 for final end semester exam for every semester. For research, one thing we take the chance of directly working in different ISRO projects, except that one can also work under our faculty for their individual interested projects.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

Those who get CGPA above 7.5, they got assistanceship from DoS every semester so they don't have to pay a single penny, but those who can't secure the above mentioned CGPA they have to pay Rs. 50,000 per semester. The mode of payment is through Internet banking. During admission they took Rs. 10,000 which they will return it after graduation. I didn't have to pay till now but I think there is no transparency in the fee-breakdown.
