How to get admission to good BTech Biotechnology Colleges?

To get admission into a good college one needs to ensure to have scored more than 90% in 10+2 level. Apart from this, most of the institutes provide admission to the course on the basis of entrance examinations, hence preparing well for the entrance exams is a must for an aspirant.

Following are some of the points to crack these entrances:

  • The questions in these entrance exams are generally asked from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English.
  • The entrance examination mainly consists of  MCQ based questions and numeric type questions. The duration of most of the entrance tests will be 3 hours.
  • The students should first introspect themselves which of the three subjects is the easiest for them. It is always advised to start with the easiest subject in these exams.
  • Students should give equal importance to each and every section while preparing for the exam.
  • It will be beneficial for a student to maintain a separate notebook where all the important formulas and points are noted down for a quick revision.
  • Students should make sure that they are well versed with tricky chapters like mechanics, optics, etc because most of the tricky questions are asked from these chapters.
  • Students should properly revise all the inorganic reactions and should work out all the organic reactions properly.
  • While preparing for the organic reactions, more emphasis should be given on the mechanism of the reaction. Most of the questions are asked from reaction mechanisms only.
  • Solving previous year papers and writing mock tests are an integral part of the preparation. Aspirants should write at least 10-15 mocks before writing the actual examination.

Last but not least, clear the rounds like counselling and verification round with confidence and success.

Note: Before shortlisting and selecting colleges finally, ensure to check the placement rate of the college, method of course delivery, admission system, and the financial aid offered  there

Ques. How is haldia institute of technology for biotechnology?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 21 Sept 21

Ans. For the purpose of academia, the Haldia Institute of Technology is extremely good for the department of Biotechnology. My friend is currently enrolled in one of the courses of Biotechnology at Haldia.  The lecturers and other members of the faculty of the department are experienced, skilled and helpful. They also offer a variety of hands-on practical experiences to help comprehend the subject in a better manner.  If you are serious about studying Biotechnology, the Haldia Institute can prove to be one of the greatest institutes to get enrolled in. It is obvious that your primary goal after successfully completing your B.Tech in Biotechnology would be to find work and get employed.  In general, you would have limited options and opportunities in the core industry of Biotech on this front. Around 1-2 companies like ITC and Parle from the core sector visit the campus of HIT for recruitment of suitable candidates for various job roles.  Many students have also been able to intern at some reputed companies from the sector before the completion of their course.  Categories Biotechnology at Haldia Institute of Technology Course Fee 3.95 lakh Highest CTC 8-9 LPA Average CTC 5 LPA Recruiting Companies ITC, Nestle, GlaxoSmithKline, Cipla, etc. In the end, all of this would depend upon you. If you study well and maintain a decent academic record throughout your course, then surely you would get a job via on-campus recruitment drives of the institute. Additionally, you can also apply to some core companies through off-campus recruitment drives.Read more

Ques. Is Vignan University, Guntur a good college for a B.Tech in bioinformatics or a B.Tech in biotech? How good are the placements and scope for higher studies abroad?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 09 Sept 21

Ans. All the private universities in India, except maybe 2–3, are trying their level best to establish themselves and Vignan is no exception. If you are considering joining the university then you should know the following.  Fees are high so plan well before joining. For a 4-year long B.Tech, the total course fee is around 9 lakhs.  Second, the syllabus keeps getting updated each year. This makes covering the syllabus, a bit tricky.  The same faculty will set the question paper so I think getting through with good grades won't be an issue. Finally, you should join biotech only if you wish to study MS abroad. Otherwise, don’t join the institute. Read more

Ques. Will it be wise to join a B.Tech program in biotechnology at Karunya University?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 08 Sept 21

Ans. As one of my friends studied B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from Karunya University, I might not be able to tell you much about biotechnology, but can provide a general overview of the institute. The university is located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and is surrounded by a lush green environment.  The university gives an option of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) which is a very good system to bring out individual talents.  Also, you will get lots of free time which you can use for pursuing your interests and hobbies.  The infrastructure is also quite good and there are a few good professors who are highly experienced. Placements are also good. CSE students received good job roles. But the Biotechnology placements may differ.  If you choose to become a residential student, you will get even more time.  Categories B.Tech in Biotechnology at Karunya University Course Fee 7.24 lakh Placement Percentage 60% Highest CTC 17 LPA Average CTC 4.3 LPA Median CTC 3.5 LPA If you have the determination and the motivation with a clear goal, then you can succeed at any university and not just at Karunya University.Read more

Placement Experience :

Lot of opportunities are available. Both Core and Non Core companies came for interview. Initially some companies what they advertised are not came for core interview like GSK, Biocon also they will force us to join programming courses and to attend IT companies interview this will create frustration throughout the day. Some days Sunday also placement classes will be conducted.but they will torture us and collect extra fees for programming classes and soft skills training upto 10,000 rupees from you.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course are designed well which will enrich our knowledge. For electives we can select multi disciplinary subject which is conducted by other departments. For example a Biotechnologist can learn robotics as a subject under mechanical engineering department for his free elective also department electives also there we can select course based on our interest. faculties are experienced and helpful. Industrial exposure is unavailable for us only few get that. No industrial visit available.

Remarks :

Our college is located in a pleasant location of western Ghats looks too greeny and clean. It will create a pleasant mindset for any one who visits first will definitely love the location. Second thing is hospitality and treating parents.i previously visit a college for enquiries they didn't receive or respect us treated like a beggar. But here they respect every one. I like this approach. Also my school teacher suggest this College is good interms of placement and value for money.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

In the self funded courses like Biotechnology and food technology, fees boom to the sky. They have a policy of raising fees by 10 percent every year. During my admission in 2016, I payed around 88 thousand for 1st semester and in the upcoming semesters, it was around 66 thousand. In 2019, students who admitted in Biotechnology payed 1,30,000 for the first semester. The fee structure is the worst part of this program in PAU which is increasing at rocketed level every year. To make the things worse, students of Biotechnology are eligible for only 1 scholarship (unlike Agriculture students who have around 7-8 scholarships) i.e Gurdev Khush Foundation scholarship which is only meant for 2 rural students per year and generating only 14000 out of it. But, on the other hand, students belonging the the SC/ST, they have some fees concession and also for those, whose income is below 2 lakh. My batch, being the first BTech batch after Bsc degree, didn't get any placement.

Campus Life :

There used to be youth fest once in a year in the month of October where all the colleges compete among themselves. The winning teams are then send at the national levels to compete. Also, there occurs a sports week in the month of March each year where the students are awarded with the cash prizes along with their national competitions. Besides, from both activities, all rounder students are also eligible for certain scholarships and they also get a 1 or 2 mark raise per subject in that semester. The mohindar randhawa library is a huge building with 4 floors and comprising books of every genre, though the editions are seldomly new. Beside, classrooms are well spacious with a facility of projector and are generally situated near the greenery. In PAU, there occurs Young Writers association, NSS group, Ambassador group. These are meant for social activities in the university ranging from conducting stage events to the road shows.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Those who carry interest in biological research, Biotechnology is the best course to pursue since it comprises broad spectrum subjects in its curriculum. Thus, one has many options to change their path for the post graduation studies. Also, PAU provides a BTech degree which is an edge. Here, faculty student ratio is 1:25 and the faculty is well educated researchers with high competency in their field. Professors teaches students in the form of ppt, videos, handwritten notes and sometimes, combining the lectures with the practical experience in the lab or field. Here, exams are conducted per semester in the three slots comprising first hourly, mid terms and final exams. First two slots comprises internal assessment in the form of short 1 hour exams whereas finals come from different Agricultural University whose duration is around 3 hours. It's easy to score marks in the internal exams as the finals can be unpredictable.

Admission :

I got the admission in the year 2012 and that time there was just a normal exam and an PI round, it was quiet easy it includes Reasoning, Aptitude, Grammar, and Basic Computer Skills. I chose this Branch because of so many reasons as I completed my higher secondary school with PCB(this is one of the main reason) to go with B.Tech in Biotechnology.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Course curriculum is research driven which leads to better career opportunities and helpful in campus placements, As university is giving 100% Placement Assistance to all the students (with no backlogs). Curriculum groomed to provide industry specific knowledge to the students. There are several industrial visits organized for the students.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

If you belong from very mediocre family then it quiet costly for you but yes you can take easy educational loan from any of the bank for your studies, but if your family is good enough to pay then it would be best for you. They give you a proper breakdown in the fees there us no hidden charges.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Compared to other private institutions fees in every nit is very low. The tuition fee was almost fifty-five to sixty thousand per annum including hostel excluding mess charges at that time. However, fees have hiked now. But it is still much low than other private institutions. It should be almost double by now. There are few opportunities for scholarships on campus. The interview was conducted for it. Few of my friends got it but it was on an economic basis so you can't hope to full them. There were plenty of job opportunities. There were two categories of mass and non-mass recruiters. You can get one job in each category. I was placed very early. In 1st month of placement in the non mass company at 6lpa so didn't apply for mass recruiters.

Placement Experience :

You will start getting internship opportunities though very less from 3rd year. However, you can try off-campus for it. PLACEMENT starts from 4th year. A number of companies come for each branch. Lots of opportunities for everyone. Even below-average student can get a decent job. The average package for core branch is 5.5 LPA And non-core companies offer 6-8 LPA on average however some students who get jobs in Qualcomm Microsoft and other companies get more than 15+lpa easily varying from company to company. Google Facebook visited too. Overall 85% of students get placed from 95% in CSE to 85-90% in ME EE AND ECE.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I was interested in Electrical Engineering that's why I choose this branch. I wanted to pursue BTech in core branch. My class was of 102 students including few foreigners and repeaters. Faculty was experienced. Few of them were very good and others were average. There were almost 20 teachers in our department. They were obviously highly qualified. The semester was off almost 5 months with midterms in almost 3rd month of the semester. Exam questions were from syllabus taught by profs. So it was not very tough to score.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I had mathematics and biology in my class 12 so, I took biotechnology as I had the idea of it as an emerging branch but sadly missed out on placement part for which I later paid a price. First-year: common courses like physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering drawing etc for all students Second-year: core subjects like biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, biophysics Third-year: advanced core subjects like molecular biology, genetic eng., immunology etc. Final year: hardly 4-5 subjects because everyone is busy in placements In biotechnology, faculty: student ratio is quite good like around 1:3. But not so good in other branches. Most of the faculties have done BSc and MSc so the way of teaching is still notes and theoretical and less technological. Few faculties were very good and had excellent teaching methods. In a semester, there would be one minor of 20 marks, one major of 60 marks and 20 marks for internal assessment. Students could pass easily but to score high little more mugging.

Campus Life :

Campus life is not so good as Allahabad is a tier 2 city and college infrastructure still looks like that of the 80s except the director building and 1st-year hostel. Restriction on girls after 8 pm on the campus makes it worst. Every batch hears about a ghosted place where the swimming pool used to exist unless a professor's daughter died in that pool. Sports are like to play at your own risk. Lawn tennis courts are the hard ones with cheap quality cement which wash away in every monsoon season. Same is there with basketball courts. Skating court is where students play mini football. Cricket is played everywhere. Culrav is the annual fest held in March end. Quality of the fest will solely depend on the amount sanctioned for the fest in that particular year and the student committee which is heading it. Avishkar is the annual tech fest where several new ideas are presented but hardly any idea is converted into reality. Funding is always an issue. Prizes are given by crowdfunding from alumni.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

2013-17 batch had fees of around 35k per semester which was increased to 50k per semester from 2014-18 batch onwards. Scholarship: I had a state govt scholarship from UP. College provided a scholarship for top 3 meritorious students of every branch every year with meagre 3k. Apart from these few scholarships like O P Jindal scholarships were also provided. Financial assistance was provided to SC/ST students and economically weaker sections. Campus jobs: Hardly any companies for biotech students. They have to go for IT or consulting jobs with packages not more than 6-7 LPA. Rest all branches except Civil Eng. have good placements in core sectors.
