Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Chemical Science and Technology)

B. Tech. Chemical Science and Technology is a programme which is structured in a way, students get adequate knowledge about Chemistry and its technology, covering all important topics of research and related areas. The delivery method of the course involves classroom lectures, practical sessions, laboratory work, internships, project research and studying the thesis.

The programme imparts knowledge about various inter-disciplinary subjects like Material Sciences, Environmental sciences and Molecular biology. The course also help students in developing miscellaneous skills like verbal and non-verbal communication skills and problem solving ability.

B.Tech. Chemical Science and Technology: Syllabus

Subjects included in the syllabus of B. Tech. Chemical Science and Technology comprises of topics of Applied Catalysis, Drug Design, Medicinal Chemistry, Nano Science and Nano Materials.

Chemistry Structure and Bonding; Origin of quantum theory, postulates of quantum mechanics; Schrodinger wave equation: operators and observables, superposition theorem and expectation values, solutions for particle in a box, harmonic oscillator, rigid rotator, hydrogen atom; Selection rules of microwave and vibrational spectroscopy; Spectroscopic term symbol; Molecular orbitals: LCAO-MO; Huckel theory of conjugated systems; Rotational, vibrational and electronic spectroscopy; Chemical Thermodynamics Detailed study of all topics of Chemistry is the main objective of the subject.
Introduction to Computing Introduction: The von Neumann architecture, machine language, assembly language, high level programming languages, compiler, interpreter, loader, linker, text editors, operating systems, flowchart; Basic features of programming (Using C): data types, variables, operators, expressions, statements, control structures, functions Students are made familiar with concepts of computing.
Medicinal Chemistry Methods of classification of drugs based on structure and biological activity; Study of the chemistry and synthesis of the following classes of drugs: Anti-infective agents such as antiseptic and disinfectant, antibiotics (including stability and degradation products), antiparasitic, antiamoebic, antihelminitic, antimycobacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antiviral  Students are Introduced to medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry.
Introduction to Quantum Chemistry  The motivation for Quantum mechanics: Historical background, postulates and general principles of quantum mechanics; Operators and their properties; Schrödinger equation, its application on some model systems : free-particle and particle in a box (1D and 3D), tunneling, the harmonic oscillator, the rigid rotator, and the hydrogen atom; Approximate methods; The variation theorem; Linear variation principle; Perturbation theory The subject includes background of quantum chemistry and its elements.
Drug Design and Development Drug targets; Pharmacokinetics: ADME, administration and dosing; Drug testing: in vivo, in vitro; Drug discovery: natural lead, synthetic lead, combinatorial synthesis; Pharmacokinetics based drug design; Computer aided drug design: Principles of QSAR, 2D QSAR, 3D QSAR; Chemical development, Patenting, Process development; Toxicology, The main objective of the subject is educate students about essentials of drug design and development.
Environmental Chemistry Atmospheric composition and behavior; Principles of contaminant behavior in the environment; Chemistry in aqueous media; Chemical and physical reactions in the water environment; Major contaminant groups and their natural pathways for removal from water, Soil: Groundwater and subsurface contamination This subject imbibes various important topics of environmental chemistry and behavior of various chemicals in environment.
Biological Chemistry of Metal Ions Essential and trace metals; Role of alkali and alkaline earth metal ions, Na+-K+ Pump, ionosphere’s and crown ethers; Metal ion transport and storage Biological concepts of chemistry of metal ions is the main objective of this subject.

Ans. I can assist you with the latest scenario of Chemical Engineering at Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata. Curriculum: Being an autonomous institute, the curriculum is pretty up-to-date. Though subjects such as Petroleum Refinery Engineering, Piping, etc are missing As the institute is new, you can see the slightest change in the syllabus over a timely basis. Faculty: Maximum teaching faculties have done their Ph.D. from reputed institutes and some even have exceptional teaching qualities. There are few, who are willing to put in extra efforts for sincere students and guide them whenever possible. Labs: Almost all labs do not have a sufficient number of apparatus which leads to students performing experiments in groups. But still, the labs are pretty much sufficient and enough to clear your basic idea about the subject. Computer Labs lack modern softwares such as Aspen, ChemCAD, etc. but recently they have started introducing FLUENT and COMSOL, MATLAB, and AUTOCAD. Research Facility: You won’t see much research happening here due to a lack of infrastructure. The project lab is not very well equipped but if want do some project you are guided by the faculty. Placements: Companies like Linde, Phillips Carbon Black Ltd., Haldia Petrochemicals, and Voith Paper recruit regularly. There is a good aura for someone who’s aspiring to crack GATE to get into some PSU and also, who wants to pursue higher studies both in India as well as abroad. Ques. How is Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal?

Ans. My brother graduated from NIT Surathkal, with bachelors in chemical engineering and hence I could give you quite a relatable experience. To be clear, chemical engineering is not like studying chemistry. There is only 20% of chemistry and the rest is all physics. You might also want to do your own little research for further understanding of the branch what subjects it entails. There is no point in me mentioning all the curriculum details here. The basic point here that I’m trying to make is that if you are fond of solving intricate problems in the petroleum and pharmaceutical industry, chemical engineering is the right fit for you. The placements here are well known and historic. Apart from the handful of students who wished to pursue their higher studies, all the other students in the batch were quite well placed. Therefore, you can stop worrying about the placements from now on. The only minor concern here is with the professors. Apart from a few professors who are quite old, the others are not quite impressive. They care less for students’ ability to understand complex matters and subjects.Read more

Ques. Can I get into the chemical engineering program at IET Lucknow with a general of 20K and a GNGL of 2,500?

Ans. Honestly, the answer is No. One of my friends was in a similar situation and he did not get admission with a rank closer to this. With the GNGL rank of 2,500, it would be very difficult for you to get into the chemical engineering program at IET Lucknow. The general rank is way higher. I would strongly suggest you not settle for any random private college with this rank. It would be better to take a year drop. However, if you have other options such as JEE Mains, you can try private colleges like LNMIIT, Thapar, etc.Read more

Few of the core companies which recruited chemical engineering students in recent years are as follows.
