Industrial Engineering and Management is a 4-year undergraduate course having 8 semesters out of which 7 semesters are on theoretical subjects and workshops. One semester is for industrial training.

Eligibility for B.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management

Eligibility criteria for B.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management stream requires a student to pass 10+2 from any recognized institute/board/university with physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects with an aggregate of 60% marks. Some of the institutes have 70% criteria. Students have to appear for JEE Main & other state level Engineering exam to take admission to this course.

Admission Process

For taking admission in B.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management students have to pass the entrance exams conducted by the various universities. After getting a rank in the entrance exam, students go through the process of counseling thereafter they get admission in their field of choice on the basis of their rank.

Entrance Exams:

For admission in national level institutes like IIT’s and NIT’s, applicants are required to clear JEE Main and JEE Advanced entrance exams. Questions are generally asked from physics, chemistry and mathematics. There are three sections in the exam & each section consists of 30 questions. The paper contains 90 questions each of 4 marks. Duration of the test is 3 hours.

Application forms of most of the entrance exams are available in the month of December & is supposed to be submitted in the month of January.

Selection Process:

Selection is done on the basis of rank scored in JEE Main for NIT’s and JEE mains plus advanced for IIT’s. Students must also clear personal interview, which is a part of the admission procedure for few institutes.

Direct Admission

Some of the engineering institutes in India offer direct admission on marks secured in 10+2 or equivalent exams. Students with 50% marks in aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics are eligible for direct admission in B.Tech. This eligibility criteria varies from institute to institute. Ans. After doing some research online, I would suggest not to go for IEM at Ramaiah, until and unless you are extremely interested in studying that particular subject. Since it will not pay you anything and you will eventually wind up in the same category of mass placement at one of the service-based companies.  Double-check the topics you will be studying. EEE is usually less exposed than IEM, yet EEE is regarded as the most complex branch to be studied.  The majority of EEE / ECE / other branches receive job offers from Infosys, HCL, Accenture, or Tech Mahindra. Ans. I know a little bit about ISI Kolkata since I have a few friends from the institute. Here is what you should know about the internships between semesters.  The course curriculum specifies that in the summer after completing your first year of M.Tech, you have to do an internship either in the industry or academia. You will have 3 options.  Industry: Many companies that visit the Campus for placements of 2nd-year students also select interns for the same. Some of such companies are Samsung Research Labs, Google, General Electric, Reliance, Flipkart, De Shaw, JP Morgan Chase, etc. The average stipend offered last year was 65,000 rupees/month. Some companies offer more than 1 lakh/month. One of my friends interned at Samsung Research Labs. Academia: As per ISI guidelines, you need to pursue an internship at a different academic Institute or industry. A friend of mine went to NUS Singapore, while two others went to a university in Germany. You can also apply to other institutes in Japan, USA, and Europe. People also go to IITs, CMI, and other Tier-1 Institutes of India. Within ISI: If for some reason you could not get an internship in the above-mentioned ways, you can approach any of the 250+ faculty members across all 5 ISI‘s and can ask to work with them in their labs. You will have internships at the end of the first year. In the second year, you will have placements, dissertation, academics. So, the only time left to do an additional internship is the winter break after the first sem. Unless you are extremely enthusiastic, I will suggest that you take a break during this period. Ans. Your decision completely depends on your priority as to what is the most important to you, the branch or the college. Being a graduate from NIT Agartala, I would suggest you go for NIT Agartala rather than NIT Mizoram. If college is the most important to you then you should go for NIT Agartala. The infrastructure is far better than most of the NITs. You may have to face some trouble regarding the faculties as they are not up to the mark. If the branch is your priority go for ECE, however, Production Engineering also has grown as a department. You can make your careers in Supply Change, Quality Management, and Control, etc. Other than this, your choice should depend upon the location. Give preference to the one that's closer to your home. Both the colleges are tier 3 Indian engineering colleges and the graduates have been working in companies with a package of 3 to 4 lakhs per annum. Ques. Which is a better choice among industrial systems engineering at IIT Kharagpur and electrical engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar?

Ans. IIT Bhubaneshwar has come into existence recently and it is a new and young institute. It needs to develop more to grow and attain the reputation like other well stable institutes. It has to improve in terms of infrastructure, faculty, and opportunities. A few points on IIT Kharagpur before taking a decision: IIT Kharagpur is a well stable and maintained institute and has everything that you wish in an institute. It has the best faculty, reputation, and infrastructure. You can choose IIT Kharagpur if you want to spend your college years on a good campus with all the facilities as it is heaven for four years. If you are not getting the branch of your interest, there is an option to change the branch. But you must attain a higher GPA in your first semester, however, it is not an assured way and is risky. Compared with Industrial System Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, EE at IIT Bhubaneshwar would be a better option as the academics and job opportunities are better. You will receive great placement offers in IIT Bhubaneshwar also. It ends up at the branch you are interested in and then the institute. Both these branches are like North and south.Read more
