B.Tech Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering: What Is It About

The course aims at preparing Naval Architects and Offshore Engineers to meet the growing demands of manpower in the industry by imparting academic and practical training on basic science subjects and common engineering subjects. The course typically covers Physics, Hydrodynamics, Chemistry and Ship Design.

A degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering prepares professionals for 2 different but related careers in the realm of designing ships and the systems that allow ships to run, preparing graduates for employment in the Navy, in the private sector, or in positions involving supervision of other workers or positions involving computer-designed software.

Marine Engineers and Naval Architects wishing to become professional engineers must pass 2 exams conducted by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), and gain sufficient work experience. Students nearing graduation may take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. After passing the FE, individuals must work for 4 years before they are eligible to sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. The NCEES indicates that the PE is typically the last step to becoming professionally-  licensed engineers in the field.

A degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering could be pursued at a college or a marine service academy. Individuals employed in the field may design ships and the systems that allow ships to run efficiently. Licensure is required in order to become a professional engineer.

Apart from the required minimum educational qualifications and age limit criteria, medical standards are also given much priority during admission to this course. After the completion of the program, successful candidates are required to take up challenging tasks while on a ship. For performing such tasks, candidates should satisfy certain health-related criteria.

Fundamental of engineering exam is an MCQ- based 8-hour examination. Most aspirants complete it by their graduation. Upon successful completion of the course, students are placed in both government and private organizations. Graduates also need to secure a valid license whose eligibility criteria are different in different States so they need to take care to satisfy criteria specific to their respective States.

Naval engineers who have completed the necessary levels of education are eligible to take NCEES. Questions generally constitute basic engineering, marine engineering, and naval architecture- related topics. With sufficient experience and proper licensure, a graduate becomes eligible to apply for managerial supervisor- level jobs in the field.

B.Tech. Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering: Admission Process

Ans. According to one of my cousin’s personal experiences, Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding is a very innovative course that a student can pursue, therefore get a chance to explore many different things. If you are interested in pursuing DoST CUSAT, then there are ample opportunities that you can get. Not only in terms of education but the college provides an excellent placement to all the students. But at the same time, you should be aware enough to grab the opportunities and work very hard to achieve the targeted career opportunities. There is a group of well-qualified faculty members who prepare you for all your future endeavors so that you can make the best out of yourself. Not only academics but they give you hands-on experience to the particular that is very helpful for you during your placement interviews. The placements are quite decent in which many prestigious companies across the country as well as from many other countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and various other countries participate. But due to the oil crisis, the placements were a little dull during the past one to two years. If we look at the overall placements they are good. Number of students placed 21 Highest CTC offered INR 24 LPA Average CTC offered INR 10 LPA Therefore, we can conclude that the placement opportunities for Naval Architecture and shipbuilding are very attractive to opt for.Read more

Ques. Should I join AMET University for Naval architecture (lateral entry)?

● Top Answer By Mansi Topa on 05 Apr 21

Ans. It cannot be said yes or no for this question as it depends upon you how much you are interested in this field. While entering college you need to have an interest in the maritime field. This means that you should know about this field, growth, career, etc. You also need to have an interest in design, food production, and technology. Since this stream is very rarely taken by students, it is very costly. For choosing such a stream you should first assure yourself that you are financially sound. The various benefit of perusing naval architecture from AMET University is as follows: As this is a totally different field you will stand out among the crowd in the society and you may get a job as lesser people take this stream. If you try jobs abroad you may get good opportunities abroad with higher packages. You will also be getting challenging projects which will help you in your career. The various types of limitations of perusing this type of course are: You may get less opportunity in India. As a fresher, you may not get good jobs with good salaries. Since you will find difficulty in getting jobs your career growth will get hampered. This field requires more innovation which can be sometimes difficult for you. Since after investing a huge amount of money in this course there is no guarantee that you will get a good job with handsome salary, so there is a lesser return on investment. Now the final decision is yours. So, choose wisely.Read more

Ques. What are the future prospects of doing a B.Tech in marine engineering from Indian Maritime University?

● Top Answer By Anwita Dhar on 17 Feb 21

Ans. While considering to opt for Marine Engineering, you must ensure that your decision is not based on information alone. As the available information will give you awareness on the subject but it will not create or develop your passion in this field of engineering. So one must be absolutely sure of their choice before opting for such a course, as it involves certain essential factors to be considered such as: You are away from your home for quite longer durations. Also, you may or may not get to visit any port while on your journey depending on the type of vessel you are sailing in. For example, tankers might opt to anchor at open ocean and they might not even visit any port, or say container vessels that load and load quite fast giving you no time for sightseeing at any port. Although merchant marine is one of the parts of this industry, if you are driven enough and educated from a paramount institute then there are good future prospects that entail you such as finding a job with oil companies or research vessels, etc. These options are quite competitive and difficult to find but if one is passionate enough you might yourself availing these opportunities in the future. In my college all my course materials are research driven and we do have hands on experience with all live experimental study where we had access to good softwares ( thanks to my professors ) CFM studies, wave flumes ( Only present in all of asia ), and we had individual hands on experience with the machineries, workshops. In my final year project we are provided license keys to high cost CFM softwares. Our exam structure is two quizes and one final semester all conceptual exams. Our placement team is top notch and we had a lot of companies coming to choose students in various fields. One mandatory industrial course was organized for us by the college and if interested we were sent for many others with the help of professors contacts.

College Events :

SAARANG (cultural festival) with a budget of 1. 5 crores which is the biggest in south India. Many colleges participate in this festival and it is usually for five days (day 1 : classical night, day 2 Choreo night, day 3 & 4 Popular night, day 5 heavy metal bands play). Shaastra ( technical festival ) again this event is top class in South India which is very big. Many students all over india register and visit our campus during this time. This event is for 5 days with tech events takes place.

Campus Life :

The sports, labs and competitions were of top class and we had all the facilities more than we could only ask for and that too the gymkhana and other facilities were of international standards. Gender ratio was boys : girls was 50 :1 ratio.
