To pursue this course in Pharmaceutical Technology, a candidate must have a pass in the qualifying examination of 10+2 level study. Most institutions accept only students who have a background in the Science stream, namely those having studied Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

The selection process for the Bachelor of Technology programme in Pharmaceutical Technology is done through the entrance examination. Anna University is one of the only institutions in the country who offer this programme, therefore the generally acceptable examination is the TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission) test, which is conducted by the university itself annually.
Applications are usually available on the online portal of the institution at the start of May, for a period of around three weeks. Candidates not from Tamil Nadu State must provide a nativity certificate in order to be eligible to write the TNEA examination. Selection for admission for eligible candidates depends primarily on the result of this test, though past academic performance may play a role in final selection.
The result of the entrance examination is posted in the month of July, and the counseling process begins immediately after. Final selection of candidates for admission happens in this phase. Reservation is applicable as per the Government of India rules.
Given that it is an extremely rare course in the country, there is no provision for lateral entry with this course. It has a heavy work load and is a course with full time study, thereby making distance education improbable. All candidates are offered admission based on their performance in the selection process, and there is no other method of gaining admission, i.e. no direct admission offers are given.
