M.Sc. in Earth Science is a 2-year long course divided into 4 semesters, minimum qualification for which is a B.Sc. in Geology from a recognized university with a minimum aggregate score of 60%.

The course offers advanced insight into a number of disciplines such as oceanography, hydrology, geology, volcanology, geomagnetism, soil science, and astronomy etc. to familiarize eligible candidates with the earth as a comprehensive system instead of isolated processes and fields.

The average tuition fee charged in India for the course ranges between INR 3,000 and 1.5 Lacs. Admission is based on the candidate’s performance in a relevant entrance exam such as the JAM entrance exam.

Successful postgraduates of the course are hired in capacities such as Volcanologists, Petroleum Geologists, Environmental Geologists, Earth Science Teachers, Glacial or Quaternary Geologists, Structural Geologists and Hydrogeologists etc., and in industries such as mining, oil and gas, minerals and water resources., and also in colleges and universities as teachers.

The initial salary offered in India to such postgraduates varies between INR 1.5 and 3.5 Lacs annually.

Organizations such as the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Hindustan Zinc Ltd, Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation (MMTC), Coal India and Mineral Exploration Ltd. Etc. hire such postgraduates.

M.Sc. in Earth Science: What is it About?

The course aims to develop in eligible candidates a critical understanding of appropriate earth- related tools, exposure to new methods and techniques, competence in developing tools for the acquisition, processing, transformation, analysis, modelling, storage and presentation of spatial data, application of geo- information in identifying and responding to development problems and in drafting development policies, developing research skills to design and undertake research and development projects in various fields of geo-informatics. Upon successful completion of the course, students would be able to:

  • analyze problems related to geo-information, encountered in professional practice and to develop appropriate methods for studying and/ or solving such problems
  • choose and possibly develop appropriate methods for geospatial framework data collection and processing
  • apply programming languages
  • apply geo-information science and earth observation technology to generate, integrate, analyze and visualize spatial data
  • understand and apply the principles of databases and data models and to use database query languages
  • formulate and carry out independent research in the general field of geo-informatics, possibly as part of a multi-disciplinary research and development project
  • communicate and defend geoinformatics- based research methods and findings.

M.Sc. in Earth Science: Career Prospects

Geo professionals are involved in exploration, surveys and production, both indoors (laboratories and offices) and outdoors (on land or at sea), often in particularly demanding conditions and in remote locations.

Mining geologists often work underground in damp conditions, often needing to wear protective clothing and safety equipment. Many geologists spend time away from home, ranging from a few days to several months. Work and travel abroad is a feature of some jobs.

Salaries of Geo professionals vary depending upon their individual qualifications, experience, and scale of the hiring organization. Geo-Professionals find employment in research institutes, private research centers and oil companies etc.

Some of the popular professional avenues open to such postgraduates are listed below with the corresponding salaries offered for the respective positions.

Job Position Job Description Average Annual Pay Scale in INR
Geo Science Engineer Geoscientists often supervise the work of technicians and coordinate work with other scientists, both on the field and in the lab. Many geoscientists are involved in the search for and development of natural resources, such as petroleum. Others work in environmental protection and preservation and are involved in projects to clean up and reclaim land. Some specialize in a particular aspect of the earth, such as oceans. 4,93,325
Geo-scientist Geoscientists typically plan and conduct field studies, in which they visit locations to collect samples and conduct surveys. Geoscientists study the physical aspects of the earth, such as its composition, structure, and processes, to learn about its past, present, and future. 4,43,732
Seismic Data Collection Engineer Seismic Data Collection Engineers play an important role in the oil and gas industry. They work with surveys, sending pulses of sound energy down through layers of rocks beneath the earth's surface. 9,02,473
Seismic Data Interpretation Engineer Seismic Interpreters use a variety of technical, computational and scientific modelling techniques to produce geophysical and geological data that can be used to analyze the hydrocarbon content of rock structures. 10,68,000
Mineral Engineer Mining Engineers ensure that underground resources such as minerals, metals, oil and gas are extracted safely and efficiently. Typical job responsibilities include ensuring that operations comply with health and safety requirements and making sure that the equipment used is safe.  6,56,000
Survey Geologist Survey Geologists work for provincial or federal government geological surveys, build a framework of geological knowledge to encourage a better understanding of mineral and energy resources in the environment.  5,11,804
Conservation Hydrologist Conservation Hydrologists typically measure the properties of bodies of water, such as volume and stream flow, collect water and soil samples to test for certain properties, such as the pH or pollution levels, analyze data on the environmental impacts of pollution, erosion, drought, and other problems.  2,93,084

Placement Experience :

There is a placement cell in Niser. And most of the students go for a Ph.D. in abroad institutes, which include MIT, Stanford, many institutes in Europe and Germany. There is also a direct placement only available for Niser students in BARC Mumbai as a scientific officer. Niser students having cgpa greater than 7 are eligible for this job, they don't have to give a written exam, they only have to give the interview. Yes, Niser provides Internships for other students as well as for own students in summer. This internship is for around 1 and a half months in summer. Interested student can also do an internship in winter break for 1 month.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course curriculum is very good and is comparable to the abroad research institute. Niser provides fundamental teaching for basic research. The exam structure is as follows, As Niser is an autonomous institute there are no restrictions on niser in terms of exams. There are basically 1 mid semester and 1 end semester exam which consist of 30% and 40% respectively and the rest 30% is given to internal assessment which includes short class tests, presentations, interaction in class, etc.

Remarks :

NISER IS one of the best premium institutes of India which provides you and good knowledge at almost no cost as they give scholarship every month. Apart from this niser is situated near the bhubhaneswar city and near the coastal area so the environment is always good. Niser have around 300 acres with shopping complex and all other facilities.
