M.Sc. Food Nutrition: Admission Process

Admission to the course is based on the candidate’s performance in a relevant institutional/ State/ national-level entrance exam, such as the national-level GATE, with a minimum aggregate score of 60%. Students qualifying the exam with the set minimum eligible cut-off score are invited for the subsequent round of counseling, based on which, the final selection is made.

The counseling process (if involved) consists of rounds of Group Discussion and Personal Interview, wherein the candidate’s general aptitude for the course is examined, and a merit list is made, allotting seats to the qualifying candidates.

One of my friends graduated from Pondicherry University and having read a few online reviews regarding this topic, I would suggest some things.  To crack this entrance test you need to plan well to score good marks. Cover the basics from grade 11 and 12 NCERT Biology and Chemistry.  You can refer to the previous years’ question papers. Try to read all the theories behind those questions.  Revising thoroughly will help score good marks. Securing a seat in Central University requires preparation strategically. So if you want to clear the Pondicherry university entrance exam just prepare according to the syllabus. Thorough preparation for a month will make things easier.Read more

Ques. What salary will I get after completing an M.sc in Food Science and Technology at IIEST Shibpur?

Ans. There is no surety that after completing an M.sc degree in Food Science and Technology from IIEST Shibpur you will get a decent salary. It is more likely that you will get placed like most of M.E./M.Tech/MSc students. If you get any job from the college campus then you might get a decent CTC. But if you try off-campus opportunities then it is tough to secure a good salary package. One of my friends also completed M.tech from IIEST Shibpur and he got a job with a salary package of Rs. 15, 000 only although he did graduate from a decent engineering college. So, in nutshell, large MNCs or small organizations with huge funding pay good salary packages. Also, these corporations don’t look for knowledge of the candidate they generally look for the required skills and how you are going to contribute your best in the organization. Read more

Campus Life :

The campus was completely newly constructed buildings that were really spacious and well built to suit the student life. the college conducted a yearly fest as well as inter-college competitions in the cultural department. The library contained adequate and updated content for research. The departments were equipped with projectors for presentations. The college conducted various extra activities very often. the college had a very strong sports department with all equipment.

Internships Opportunities :

The college encouraged the students to do internships for a short period of time. It is part of the curriculum for Masters students and it is to be done during their semester holidays. For my major, as it focused on two fields, we did two internships. one was in the hospital as a Dietician and next was in the food industry. We were asked to do the internships as a small project that would lead to the major project we chose in the final semester.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I had completed my under graduation in food science and nutrition and wanted to pursue the same field, so I chose this course. The college had a good Faculty: student ratio. All the staff was very well qualified with most of them having a Ph.D. or were doing it. The exams were semester based and were set by the university and bit difficult to tackle.

Admission :

I got admission in the college based upon my graduation marks. The qualifying criteria was a graduation degree in B.Sc(Food and Nutrition/Home science) B. A(Home science) or B. R. S(Home science). I had my B. Sc in food and nutrition. My M. Sc was also in Food and nutrition.

Placement Experience :

There were no such placement drives on our campus as is the case with these kind of colleges. However, the college prepared us for job opportunities. The faculty also helped students get placed. Skill development sessions for employability were also held at the University.

Remarks :

The college was established in 2009 by Shri Narendra Modi, then chief minister of Gujarat. The university aimed at lifting the standards of education for children and is doing a great job at that. I tremendously enjoyed my time at the University.

Hi Sharmistha, generally, the university demands a graduation degree in relevant field to be eligible. However, in some of the colleges, eligibility is not subject-specific. Thus, you may apply in those colleges/universities.
