M. Tech in Earthquake Engineering: What is it About?

Earthquake Engineering is the field of science that involves the study of the protection of society and natural and human-made atmosphere from earthquakes by reducing seismic risk to socio-economically acceptable levels. Traditionally, earthquake engineering has been defined as the science of bolstering structures to withstand seismic impacts, which is why it is considered a subset of geotechnical and structural engineering.
Earthquake Engineering is a systematic study of earthquakes. It is an investigation of and attempt at resolving the danger posed by damaging earthquakes. These engineers plan, design, construct and manage earthquake- resistant structures and facilities.

Since 60% of Indian geography is declared sensitive to earthquakes, the role of Earthquake Engineers proves vital in building- quake resistant structures.

M. Tech in Earthquake Engineering: Career Prospects

An Earthquake Engineer researches data and gathers information from varied locations and sources and find solutions for making structures that are earthquake- resistant. In addition to gathering information and researching, they also travel far for gathering information from local bodies. These professionals can find job opportunities with research and development organizations engaged in researching on earthquakes. They can also find job placements as researchers, professors and lecturers or at NGOs, working for environment and earthquake- related issues.

An engineer in this profession in India earns between INR 25,000 to 30,000 in the beginning of the career, increase with experience.
Some of the popular professional avenues open to such postgraduates are listed below with the corresponding salaries offered for the respective positions.

Job Position Job Description Average Annual Pay Scale in INR
Geo Science Engineer Geoscientists often supervise the work of technicians and coordinate work with other scientists, both on the field and in the lab. Many geoscientists are involved in the search for and development of natural resources, such as petroleum. Others work in environmental protection and preservation, and are involved in projects to clean up and reclaim land. Some specialize in a particular aspect of the earth, such as oceans. 4,93,325
Geo-scientist Geoscientists typically plan and conduct field studies, in which they visit locations to collect samples and conduct surveys. They study the physical aspects of the earth, such as its composition, structure, and processes, to learn about its past, present, and future  4,43,732
Seismic Data Collection Engineer Seismic Data Collection Engineers play an important role in the oil and gas industry. They work from surveys, sending pulses of sound energy down through layers of rock beneath the earth's surface. 9,02,473

Ques. Which is better after graduate in civil: an M.Tech in transportation engineering from an IIT, or construction management from an IIT or NICMAR?

● Top Answer By Debdeep Majumder on 23 Sept 21

Ans. IIT Delhi and IIT Madras offer a Post-Graduation in Construction Technology and Management. To secure a seat at either of the institutes, you must obtain a good rank in the GATE examination. IIT Delhi gives more weightage to the technical aspects of the course, while NICMAR focuses more on the managerial aspects of Construction. The curriculum of the course is unmatched, yet the placements, at times, can be quite unanticipated.  Both the courses are quite equivalent to each other on various stages whatsoever. But, when the decision boils down to which among the both is better, then IIT Delhi might win the race. Now, the Transportation Engineering department from IITs is indeed a great course. The average package some of my seniors from this course secured was about INR 5 LPA. However, by all means, your placement partially also depends upon whether or not you are typically prepared for it. Read more

Ques. Is a M.Tech in structural engineering at the NIT Trichy worth doing?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 31 Aug 21

Ans. Yes, you can definitely think of pursuing an M.Tech degree from NIT Trichy. But, always check the placement percentage if you are thinking of getting a job after your degree. The M.Tech is definitely better as compared to other branches like civil engineering at NIT Trichy. According to recent data, about 87.1% of students from M. Tech were placed in the placement drive of 2020. Categories M.Tech Structural Engineering at NIT Warangal Course Fee 1.48 lakhs Course Duration 2 years Highest CTC 12-13 LPA Average CTC 6.3 LPA Recruiting Companies Aricent, Honeywell, Ambuja Cement, Aditya Birla, etc. You can even do a project in your second year and that is completely dependent on your interests and the resources that are available. Each student is assigned a project guide who will guide you. But, it is up to you to make the best of this opportunity.Read more

Ques. Is environmental geotechnology (civil) branch for M.Tech at NIT Calicut good enough?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 20 Aug 21

Ans. The M.Tech program of Environmental Geotechnology at NIT Calicut is an interdisciplinary branch. In the first semester, you will be taught about Geotechnological Engineering and in the second semester, you will learn about subjects that are in Environmental Engineering such as Groundwater Hydrology. All in all, this course is more towards the Geotechnical side than the Environmental side. You also have to undertake projects. Usually, most people opt for Geotechnical projects. Talking about the prospects of the future, L&T has been the only recruiters for some years now they recruited very few students pursuing postgraduate.  If you want to teach this course in the future, then pursuing it will be a good idea. It is definitely a good course but not the best. Join if you are interested in the course and not for the NIT tag. Read more

Ques. Which is better - doing M.Tech from IITs or going for NITIE Mumbai?

● Top Answer By Zakia Parween on 13 Aug 21

Ans. Having to know some people studying in both these colleges, I can say that they are equally good. You can opt for any one of them, their respective programs are also good. They are recognized as Centres of Excellence by MHRD, Govt of India. The choice mainly depends on the individual and their preferences. You should go for the one you are enthusiastic about. NITIE offers 3 courses, where the selection is through GATE scores. These include Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering, Project Management, and Manufacturing Management. These courses are a mixture of technical and business management. IITs offer M.Tech through GATE exam scores.  It involves core specialization and nothing about industrial management. So, the selection of the college and the course entirely depends on you. Go through them and then decide which will be a better option for your career.Read more
