M.Tech. in Embedded Systems is a 2-year long full-time course divided into 4 semesters. An Embedded System is a combination of hardware systems and software systems built into equipment that is not always recognized as being computerized, such as the systems that control a car’s anti-lock brakes, an automatic pilot of an aircraft, or the sensors and filters used in processing plants.

Examples of properties of typically embedded computers when compared with general-purpose counterparts are:

M.Tech. in Embedded Systems: What is it About?

Almost all Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical systems are now controlled by controllers which are embedded as part of the complete system. Such a system is an Embedded System. Some examples of such a system are tele-communication systems, transportation systems, chemical-processing plants such as aircrafts and automobiles, home appliances, and bio-medical instruments such as microwave ovens and washing machines. Embedded Systems are typically designed to perform certain specific tasks, often in real time, and satisfying certain performance requirements. This is achieved through the controllers and software called firmware, which are stored in the Read Only Memory of the controller.

The vast majority of control systems built today are embedded, that is, they rely on built in, special-purpose microcontrollers to close their feedback loops. Systems may contain a large number of controllers. Within such settings, controllers often use shared networks to communicate with each other, and with large numbers of sensors and actuators scattered throughout the system. Such a design of embedded controllers, and the accompanying intricate and automated communication networks that support them, raises new problems, such as:

  • challenge to maximize the effectiveness of the embedded hardware.

Eligibility for M.Tech. in Embedded Systems

As a minimum criterion of eligibility, candidates aspiring for admission to the course are needed to have completed graduation (BE/B.Tech. in ECE/ TE/ EEE/ CSE/ ISE/ Instrumentation Technology/ Medical Electronics, or AMIE, or another such equivalent qualification. Graduation needs to have been completed with a minimum aggregate score of 50% (45% in case of SC/ST candidates), and from a recognized university/ institution.

As far as the choice between Bangalore and Coimbatore campuses is concerned, then without any doubt, Coimbatore campus is better between the two. Here are some details about the campuses. Coimbatore Campus: This course is offered by the Electrical and Electronics department. So if you are an electrical graduate, then it is better for you. The department has very good lab facilities. There are various development boards and robotic kits which will help you increase your skills. The faculty are very helpful and will help in every way both academically as well as publishing in your journals. Bangalore Campus: Here the course is offered by the Computer Science department. Ans. B.Tech courses are preferred than MTech. courses by most students as BTech courses offer more placements. M.Tech is a more research-based program. IIT Dhanbad is an older institution than IIT Bhubaneswar and offers a large alumni base. IIT Dhanbad ranks 42 among Indian universities. If you are interested in taking up a research-based course that focuses more on academics you can opt for MTech in EEE from IIT Bhubaneswar but if you are looking for placements then a BTech in EEE from IIT Dhanbad will be better. As IIT Dhanbad is a more reputed Institute when it comes to reliability. 75% students are placed in IIT Dhanbad in this year in the EEE department (BTech). The average salary offered to an EEE graduate is 15.5 lakhs per annum. MTech Students from IIT Bhubaneswar have a 68% placement rate in Core Engineering Departments, being offered a salary package of 10-16 lakhs per annum.
