M. Tech. in Reliability Engineering is a 2- year long course divided into 4 semesters, with each semester lasting a period of 6 months. It is a sub-discipline of Systems Engineering and emphasizes the importance of dependability or reliability in the lifecycle management of a product.

Reliability is described as the ability of a system or component to function under stated conditions for a specified period. Components such as testability, maintainability and maintenance are often defined as a part of Reliability Engineering.

The average annual course fee in India ranges between INR 1 and 3 Lacs, depending upon the institute offering the course. The basic eligibility to pursue the course is graduation (B.Tech.) in any engineering discipline with a minimum aggregate score of 55% or equivalent CGPA, completed from a recognized university. For availing admission to the course, applicants need to appear for and qualify the GATE with a valid score. The admission process also includes an additional round of interview.

The average annual starting salary offered in India to successful postgraduates of the course ranges between INR 3 and 8 Lacs, depending upon the candidate’s expertise in the field.

M. Tech. in Reliability Engineering: What is it About?

Reliability Engineering is essentially the study, evaluation, and life-cycle management of reliability. It is also defined as the ability of a system or component to perform its required functions under stated conditions for a specified period of time. The course focuses on costs of failure caused by system downtime, costs of spaces, repair equipment, personnel and costs of warranty claims, besides particularly dangerous system failure modes. The course includes topics on model product failure time and analysis of data to determine reliability characteristics and other general data- driven decisions required to ensure the reliability of a product.

The course aims to offer a balanced training in the scientific and technological aspects of Reliability Engineering. Testing and testability are other prominent issues that concern reliability engineers. Predicting the workability and life-time of a product before it is shipped has a tremendous economic value in terms of reduction of servicing costs and of warranty commitments.

Eligibility for M. Tech. in Reliability Engineering

Candidates wishing to apply for the course need to meet the following minimum criteria of eligibility:

  • A minimum aggregate score of 55% at the level of graduation in B.E./ B. Tech. or equivalent subject in a relevant discipline, completed from a recognized institute. (For IITs and UPES, the minimum percentage required is 60% at the level of graduation).
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field, such as Aeronautical / Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Production, Industrial or Metallurgical Engineering, Computer Science, Instrumentation and Mining Engineering, Electronics and Reliability Engineering with a valid GATE score.
  • Candidates with M.Sc. degree in Statistics/ Mathematics/ Probability with minimum 55% marks in aggregate can also apply.
  • Candidates awaiting their final year exam’s results can also apply on provisional basis. Admission is subsequently confirmed on the basis of performance at the level of graduation.

Many institutes prefer students with professional experience, therefore, it is advised for candidates to acquire a work experience of a minimum of 24 months. Also, candidates with two years of relevant work experience are exempted from appearing in GATE, provided their candidature is sponsored by the employer.

M. Tech. in Reliability Engineering: Admission Process

Eligible candidates are required to qualify a relevant entrance examination followed by a round of group discussion. Subsequently, qualifying candidates are needed to go through additional rounds of personal interview as the final stage in the process of selection. The main entrance exam held in India for admission to the course is GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).

GATE is an All-India examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The entrance exam is primarily held for admission to post graduate courses in the field of engineering, technology, architecture and science.

The online test is a multiple- choice and numerical- type exam divided into three sections, namely General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and the specialty subject.

However, a few colleges such as ISI Kolkata also have their own entrance examinations such as Manipal Institute of Technology and UPES (written tests and interview), and admission procedures in place for selecting and admitting candidates.

Trust me; you will get a job with an average CTC matching with top B-Schools in India. Job roles such as Business Analyst/Data Scientist and many others will be offered to you. Now let me help you more in understanding this. Let’s break this into two parts – Job vs. Higher Studies. Pursuing Ph.D./Higher Studies is a tough deal if you're applying abroad. My personal perspective, in this case, will be, go for a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering domain.  That's the best option, as it will be aligned with QROR. Now, you should definitely rethink before applying for the courses like Data Science/ Machine Learning domain, or Statistics. For this, I would suggest you consider doing some projects. And if you are at the Indian Statistical Institute you will get a plethora of opportunities. So first and foremost, just be crystal clear with your future endeavors before joining any course. Ques. How is the Industrial and Engineering and Management course at NIT Calicut?

Ans. One of my friends with a GATE score of 670 took admission to NIT Calicut. The academics in the field of industrial and management are good but the placements are not good enough. The faculty of NIT Calicut is exceptionally well, knowledgeable and experienced. They are way better than the faculty of NIT Trichy or ISM Dhanbad.  Placements for M.Tech courses are very bad and it is the same in all institutes. The only exception is flagship IITs and NIT Trichy. Therefore, one should opt for NIT Trichy than NIT Calicut.  Therefore, if you are interested in a job right after the course, go for NIT Trichy. If you want to study further in this field, then NIT Calicut would be a suitable choice.Read more
