Masters in Technology in VSLI Design and Embedded system: What is it about?

Masters in Technology in VSLI Design and Embedded system will cover the basics and engineering aspects of designing and developing IC based systems. The course will include the development of both physical and mental proficiency in the field that is the development of hands on skills as well as of the ability to design systems virtually. The VSLI part of the course will focus on hands on skills related to architecting semiconductor devices and circuits, designing systems with the use of embedded components such as CPU, memory, and peripherals. Students would learn the function and usage of the lowest physical devices and the application of more evolved systems.

The course essentially prepares its students for being able to design large scale integrated systems, for which they are trained in research and innovation since all systems must be more beneficial than the one that pre-existed it, in order to justify its creation. It trains the students to be absolutely on point when it comes to all things IC so that they are able to invest their energy at the latter stage of it, which is designing, instead of being focussed on function and usage since that should be already understood when the design is being created.

Graduates from this course are likely to be recruited into resource based technology planning and implementation sectors, or in academic and research fields. They can expect to work as embedded developers, test engineers, software development engineers, system analysts, etc. They will essentially find jobs in fields which require IC designers with an in depth knowledge of embedded systems.

Ques. How is microelectronics and VLSI design in IIT Ropar?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 13 Sept 21

Ans. According to my friend at IIT Ropar, the first batch of Microelectronics and VLSI Design was from 2019-2020, where there were only 10 and 7 students for the M.Tech and Ph.D. course respectively. The faculties of IIT Ropar are young and energetic.  It’s quite early to predict placements and hence should wait for some time.  Being an IIT, the college is well developed, the infrastructure is decent, and the academics are great. The faculty of IIT Ropar for Microelectronics and VLSI Design branch of 1st semester includes 1 professor from IIT Delhi and 5 professors from IIT Bombay and Guwahati. The courses for the 1st semester for the Microelectronics and VLSI Design includes a total of 5 courses, 1 lab, and 1 seminar session.  These include Digital IC Design, RF Engineering, CMOS Analog IC Design, Semiconductor Device Physics and Modeling, CAD for VLSI Design, Circuit Simulation Lab, and Seminar Session. Categories Microelectronics and VLSI Design at IIT Ropar Course Fee INR 72,940 Average CTC 14.6 LPA Recruiting Companies DRDO, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, HCL, etc. Some industries visit IIT Ropar in the first semester and the selected students have to choose to work with them. The 2nd year project can be completed in any company also if a student wishes to. The department helps the student to find the company if the student wants and if not then he/she can do the project on the campus itself.Read more

Ques. Which companies recruit students from VLSI (MTech) in NIT trichy?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 06 Sept 21

Ans. As some of my friends studied M.Tech at NIT Trichy, I might be able to provide you with the answers.  Core firms such as Nvidia, Alcatel Lucent, Intel, Sandisk, Samsung, etc. are regular.  Almost 100% of the students are placed. They received salary packages ranging from 10 - 12 LPA.  However, you will need to put in a lot of effort and be in the top 5% of your class.  Remember that you will be competing with UGs, PhDs, and MS students for job opportunities.  Hence, competition will be fierce, and your academics as well as your relationships with professors and fellow students will be crucial. There are various software and analytics companies that offer jobs to everyone with a basic understanding of coding.  Aside from these, you will have a plethora of different research options, both within and outside the country. So in the end, I would like to conclude that there is no one factor but various. So work hard, polish your skills and build a good CV and give your best shot in the interview.Read more

Ques. I am thinking of joining KJ Somaiya, VidyaVihar for mtech electronics. Is it is a good college study wise? I am not concerned for placement.

● Top Answer By Debdeep Majumder on 02 Sept 21

Ans. It is not just KJ Somaiya, but every college you decide to go to, find out the following, especially for post-graduate studies: Qualifications of the professors in your college The crowd of the college and scope for securing internships on different topics If there is any research going on in the college and if so, how is the research cell? Many M. Tech students wish to do something new and collaborate with people having the same interests as well. Opinions of others about the college. When you interact with the students you will come to know what places are nice and where you can hang out A friend of mine completed her M. Tech from KJ Somaiya and her experience was average. The research cell is not great and some teachers are well versed in their subject whereas others struggle with basic knowledge. If you are concerned about placements, those are definitely improving over the years and this college will only be a good option for you if you are not looking for placements. Read more

Ques. How is NIT Calicut regarding the placements for an MTech in VLSI design?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 25 Aug 21

Ans. I have a friend who recently graduated with M.Tech in VLSI Design from NIT Calicut. According to him, the placements are great. According to recent placement highlights, the average CTC offered at the institute is 11 LPA. In order to secure decent placements, all you need is the following.  Knowledge of EDA tools of Mentor or Cadence or Synopsys. Be skilled in RTL, Verilog coding. Know basics of verification and design parameters for speed vs power vs area. You also should have sound knowledge of Place and Route; extract parameters to compare or adjust design parameters with layout changes. The demand in this field is high. Work hard and you will succeed.Read more

Campus Life :

I may not be accurate, but people of both genders are almost equal in number. Student parties and functions include freshers, Dandiya night, etc. We have several workshops around the year, students do participate on many and learn so as to improvise their skills. Also, the college has several societies Incubation center, Entrepreneur cell, Cultural committee, sports committee, student senate, etc. The labs here at IIITD are magnificent. They are well-equipped with systems are several apparatuses. They are accessible 24*7, which is the best part at the college. Well, entirely the college and its events and activities are great with all kinds of availabilities.

Placement Experience :

Qualcomm, NXP Semiconductors, Continental, SanDISK, MathWorks, STMicroelectronis, Synopsys, Almost every student from our senior batch has either got a FT or is on an internship. Talking about the percentage, it would be around 96-97%. All the companies have their own criteria for selecting and shortlisting students. The minimum criteria to sit for placements is of cgpa > 6.5. The institute organizes several mock tests and also sends material which contains questions from previous year placements.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The learning and curriculum at IIIT-D is excellent. Though, while trying to cope up with the curriculum, one has to work much harder, but it is definitely worth it! The knowledge and hands-on experience which this college facilitates, makes the student grow practically, which is in-turn a great way to prepare on for the industrial backgrounds. Industrial visits were planned for us, but due to COVID-19, it wasn't possible.
