M.Phil. in Political Science or Master of Philosophy in Political Science is a postgraduate research course in Political Science. The course can be called a mirror equivalent of Ph.D. but is different from it in certain aspects. Many colleges offer this course in an integrated form with Ph.D. also. The course duration is generally 2 years but can be more if distance education is pursued. When the M.Phil-Ph.D. integrated course is pursued, the M.Phil. duration is supposed to be 1 year.

The eligibility for pursuing this course is that the students should have earned a masters degree in political science from a good college.

M.Phil. in Political Science: Eligibility

The only eligibility for pursuing this course is that the student should have obtained a masters degree in political science from a recognized college. The college should be affiliated to UGC and the student should have obtained the minimum marks required.

Universities like Delhi University, MDU, Rohtak asks for a Post-Graduate Degree in relevant discipline with minimum 55% marks or an equivalent grade from a recognized College or University.

The percentage in qualifying Master’s degree increases to 60% in colleges like Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal, Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune. While it drops down to 50% in Presidency College, Chennai.

Open universities like IGNOU and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad asks for 50% and 55% respectively in post-graduation. 

M.Phil. in Political Science: Admission Process

Admission in M.Phil. Political Science is provided through the entrance exam conducted by various universities and colleges. Students are selected through a written test and personal interview thereafter. Final merit list is prepared on the basis of the marks secured by a student in the written entrance test, marks of the interview and marks secured by him/her in the qualifying examination. Colleges that follow this criterion before offering admission to any student are:

Candidates having NET/JRF score are however exempted from the entrance test and have to appear only for the interview.

M.Phil. in Political Science: Private

Many colleges and universities offer this course in private mode, i.e., distance education mode too. IGNOU, a very well known college offers this course in distance learning (correspondence) mode. When the course is pursued in private mode, the course duration can go up to 6 years.
