Qualifying vs Final Cut Off

Qualifying CAT Cut off vs Final CAT Cut off

There are two kinds of cut offs that are present in the CAT exam. These are the CAT cut offs (IIM eligibility cut off) and the final CAT cut offs (IIM MBA call). The differences between the two are enumerated as below:

Qualifying CAT cut offs  Final CAT cut offs
This is also called the IIM eligibility cut off / IIM shortlist cut off. It represents the minimum score that a candidate must get so that they can eligible for the interview call (for WAT / GD-PI round) from the IIMs.  Also called the IIM call cut offs / official IIM cut offs, these represent the minimum percentage score that is fixed by the IIMs for selecting candidates for the 2nd stage of selection. This stage is generally the WAT / D-PI round.
Just because a candidate has met the requirements for the qualifying cut off does not guarantee their selection for the WAT – GD / PI round. Just because a candidate has met the requirements for the final cut off, it does not mean that the candidate will necessarily be selected for admission into any IIM Institute.
This specific cut off is ascertained before the CAT result has been announced.  This cut off is decided after the release of the CAT result
The qualifying cut off are above 90 percentile for all IIMs except IIM Ahmedabad whose cut off has remained at 80 percentile since 2016.  The final cut off reaches as high as 99+ percentile for most IIMs, especially the top ones, and 95+ for the relatively new ones.
The qualifying cut offs include overall as well as sectional cut offs  The final cut offs include overall and sectional cut offs
The qualifying cut off is segmented into categories. The cut off for general students generally ranks pretty high at 90 percentile, while it is relatively lower for reserved category students, usually ranging from 70 and below.  The final CAT cut off is regulated category-wise. For general category students that are male and come from an engineering background, the final cut off is higher compared to students that come from the reserved category, female students, and those that come from a stream that is not engineering.

Factors Affecting CAT Cut off 2022

CAT Cut off 2022 will vary for each participating institute based on a number of factors. The major factors taken into consideration while determining CAT Cut off percentile are:

  • Difficulty level of CAT exam
  • Number of candidates who took the exam
  • Number of candidates who cleared the exam
  • Number of seats available at the respective institute
  • Previous Year Cut off trends
  • Number of candidates across different categories

Check CAT 2022 Selection Procedure

Ques. Is clearing CAT cut off enough to get admission in the IIMs?

Ans. No, CAT result is followed by a WAT and PI for which candidates will be sent personal call letters from IIM(s). Merely clearly CAT cut off does not guarantee you get a call from any IIM. New IIMs participate in CAP (Common Admission Process) and prepare their final admission list on the basis of CAP (Common Admission Process), CAT Scores, and candidate’s profile.

Ques. Do the IIMs and other participating B-Schools announce sectional scores?

Ans. The IIMs and other participating B-Schools announce overall CAT Cut off Percentile as well as sectional Cut off Percentile for their respective admission selection procedures.

Ques. Are the CAT Cut off Scores the same for all categories of candidates?

Ans. No. The minimum cut-off (overall as well as sectional cut-offs) for reserved category students is different and lesser than the general category students.

Ques. What parameters are considered for selection for admission at the IIMs?

Ans. The parameters that are considered by the IIMs during the selection procedure are:

  • CAT score
  • All academic records till the qualifying examination
  • Gender diversity
  • Academic diversity
  • Work experience (if any)

Ques. What is the minimum score required to clear CAT cut off?

Ans. A minimum score to qualify CAT cannot be specified offhandedly as the system of scoring is relative and dependent mainly on the number of participants; the cut-off score varies each year and is announced by the IIMs and other participating institutes. A detailed study of retrospective cut-off data can reveal a trend to estimate an expected cut-off figure.

Ques. Do the candidates have to clear each of the sections separately?

Ans. Yes, candidates are supposed to clear each section separately as the IIMs and other participating B-Schools shortlist based on overall cut-off as well as the sectional cut-off.

Ques. What is the minimum cut-off for each section?

Ans. Just like the overall cut-off score is relative and varies every year. Likewise, sectional cut-off also varies with every edition of CAT. However, experts, based on their experience, swear by the thumb rule of 70% questions attempted of the total lot with an 80% accuracy rate is required to clear the cut-off score trend.

Ques. Will each section have the same CAT Cut off 2022?

Ans. Sectional and overall CAT cut off wll be released by the IIMs. It is not essential that each section will have the same CAT Cut off 2022.

Ques. If I secure the prescribed cut-off score of my preferred B-School, is my admission guaranteed?

Ans. Getting a good percentile does not ensure selection for admission in the desired B-School. Performance in the selection round is equally essential to convert an interview call into an admission offer. Candidates’ level of Confidence, attitude and overall quality of performance in the Selection round is what ensures an offer for admission in the desired B-School.

Ques. What percentile would be needed in the CAT to get a call from the top IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, and Lucknow) at these credentials General/Male/2.5 years of Work experience; ClassX-91%, XII-93%, B.E.- 95 %?

Ans.

  • A: With a splendid academic track record and a work experience of 2.5 years, you have a good chance of getting interview calls from all the IIMs.
  • An engineer with a CAT score of 99.65 percentile and a non-engineer with 95 percentile in CAT can expect a call from IIM-Ahmedabad.
  • IIM Calcutta lays 56% weightage on CAT score; thus a general category male candidate will need to score around 99.55 percentile for an interview call from IIM-C.
  • IIM Bangalore has a complicated process with weightage for Class X and XII marks, graduation marks and work experience. However, the institute lays less stress on CAT score and as such a 95 percentile scorer can expect a call from IIM-B but to ensure an admission offer, it is safe to score 98 percentile or more.
  • IIM Lucknow lays 60% weightage on CAT score and so a higher CAT score as compared to IIM-B, of around 99% percentile is advisable for an interview call.

Ques. What are the different candidate categories for which the IIMs and other participating institutes release separate CAT Cut off scores?

Ans. The IIMs consider Candidate's category and other participating B-Schools are General, Other Backward Caste (Non-Creamy Layer) and Transgenders (IIAM-A only), Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Differently Abled Persons or Persons with Disability.

Ques. How much do I need to score to get 99+%ile in CAT Cut off?

Ans. That is subjective to several factors like candidates appearing for CAT, the difficulty level of the exam, previous year trends, etc. Read CAT Score Calculation

Ques. What is the selection procedure for Admission to IIMs?

Ans. The candidate after attaining the minimum CAT cut off marks is called the Personal Appearance round which consists of Personal Interview and Written Ability Test.

Ques. What is the average minimum percentile for the general category?

Ans. The minimum CAT percentile varies for all the IIMs concerned but on average the minimum percentile for the general category is 85.

Ques. Should I join IIM-Kozhikode or give CAT again or try for PGPX next year with 3 years of work-ex?

● Top Answer By Ankit Sinha on 17 Nov 22

Before taking any decision, you must go through all three options that you have in great detail. There are a few reasons why you should not go for IIM-Kozhikode. First, the fees are extremely high, estimated to be around Rs 19.00 lakh. Second, the average package offered at IIMK is around 16-17L, and you will earn more than that after two years. But, once again, if you are desperate for an MBA, you can enroll in IIMK, which comes with the 'IIM' label, which will be very useful in the long run. Give CAT once more. You only need to get a high CAT score and then leave the rest up to their selection process. Second, CAT is extremely unpredictable. With proper preparation, you can achieve excellent results. So, if you're willing to work another year and are confident enough to take the CAT, this is the perfect way to take it. You should look into PGPX from ISB or elsewhere. This option is appealing, but it requires hard work and careful consideration. If you enjoy working in IT and want to advance quickly, this is the path to take....Read more

Ques. What is the admissions procedure for IIM after CAT results?

● Top Answer By Orchid Chowdhury on 07 Dec 21

Every IIMS and other management colleges make a shortlist based on the percentile after CAT result is declared. With percentile, IIMs also consider other factors like academics, category, gender factor, diversity, etc. The list is made for the second round i.e. GD/PI or WAT/PI.  GD/WAT will have a generic topic. There can be a topic from current affairs. PI is taken by some of the faculty and alumni of the institute. In institutes like FMS, there is an extempore after PI.  After these rounds, a final shortlist is made with weightage given to GD/PI or WAT/PI performance and CAT percentile. Individual IIMs also have some additional factors. The offer letters are then sent out to top candidates in each category up to the maximum number of seats. The rest candidates are waitlisted. As students choose admissions, the waitlist continues to change. ...Read more

Ques. Should I take IIM-Kashipur/IIM-Raipur or take the CAT &/or GMAT again?

● Top Answer By Aditya Mahatha on 06 Jan 23

I know this decision is a bit difficult to make. What you need to keep in mind is that these two colleges should not be compared to other great IIMs or even ISBs. Those B Schools are at another level and cannot be on par with Kashipur or Raipur. To facilitate a better decision, I will mention the circumstances of these B Schools then you can choose after considering all options. IIM Indore and IIM Kashipur: Both these colleges are not worth a year drop as they will help you earn only an extra 1.5-2 LPA. Moreover, in the coming years, Kashipur and Raipur will have almost the same brand value as that Indore and Kozhikode. IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Lucknow and Bangalore: All these top IIMs are definitely worth a year's drop provided that you are confident enough to cope with the cutoff. All these IIMs consider your academics while selecting so if that is your reason for the year drop I don’t think it will help. There is no surety of admission even after a percentile of 100.  ISB: This one is at a whole different level and is in the category of elite B Schools like UCB, NYU, HBS, etc. The top-notch faculty offers amazing pedagogy at relatively low fees. CAT is sufficient for IIMs. But if you want to go for ISB, a work experience of 4+ years and a GMAT are a must. ...Read more

Ques. What is the IIM selection process in detail? What is the advantage of having job experience or being a fresher in the IIM selection process?

● Top Answer By Surbhi Mishra on 08 Jul 22

IIMs shortlists students for admission based on their CAT score. The second step of selection is GD-PI. For final selection, students are usually shortlisted based on their past academic performance, entrance examination score, and performance in GD-PI. IIMs also consider other factors such as work experience, gender diversity, academic diversity, etc. while shortlisting students. Weights given to these factors are different for different IIMs.  Having relevant work experience can certainly help you get a shortlist. ...Read more

Ques. What kind of profile is required to clear the CAT interview for IIM Ahmedabad?

● Top Answer By Ahana Mishra on 29 Nov 22

Everyone knows that IIM A values diversity over grades. There have been students who were not even waitlisted at IIM K but were at IIM A due to their extremely unique profiles. If you want to build a profile for IIM A, strive for originality. Do something that no one else is doing, such as starting a blog, having a strong digital presence on Instagram, writing on Quora, and so on. Consider what students with a 99 percentile typically do, such as being brilliant in academics and receiving a call from IIM Ahmedabad. Choose a domain in which these students are unlikely to excel and excel in that domain. Furthermore, activities such as writing a blog or hosting a YouTube channel will undoubtedly help you, in the long run, to secure summer and final placements during your MBA. As a result, you will gain valuable insights and hands-on experience with various social media tools such as SEO, SEM, Analytics, and so on....Read more
