GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 has been released by IIT Kharagpur along with the official notification. According to the updated criteria, GATE Eligibility 2022 has been expanded to allow candidates with BDS and M.Pharma degree to apply for the exam. Authorities had earlier relaxed GATE Eligibility Criteria last year, allowing candidates currently in the third or higher year of their degree program to fill GATE Application Form along with candidates who have already completed any government-approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts. 

Apart from that, candidates can now appear for 2 papers. With the introduction of Humanities & Social Sciences and Environmental Sciences & Engineering papers, commerce and arts background students can also apply. In accordance with GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022, candidates from any age group can apply for the entrance examination. From the information brochure that will be available on the official website of GATE 2022, applicants can check GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022.

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022: Nationality, Age Limit and Number of Attempts

In the below table, GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 as per some parameters such as the age limit and the number of attempts is given.

Nationality · Candidates residing in India or out of the country are eligible to sit for GATE 2022.
Age Limit · There is no maximum age limit to appear in the test. Candidates of any age can apply for the entrance exam.
Number of Attempts · This entrance test is held only once reada year. And, candidates can appear in this exam as many times as possible.

Note: GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 for candidates wishing to opt for the M.Tech courses will be different for various institutes participating in GATE 2022.

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 for International Candidates

Candidates from various countries, outside of India, are eligible to appear in GATE 2022 Exam. GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 for candidates residing outside of India are represented below in a table format.

The below table presents GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 for candidates who did not get through any papers of their qualifying examination of the final year degree course. The same criteria will be applicable for candidates who have appeared in the final semester exam.

Important Notes:

  • It is required for candidates, who have qualified for any required examination in 2018 or before this year, to submit a certificate after the completion of the program/degree certificate/membership certificate/professional certificate and provisional certificate issued by the society or institute last attended.
  • For candidates who have passed the degree program in 2022 or after this year, need to submit a certificate issued by principals or scorecard for section A of AMIE.

After checking the criteria of GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022, candidates must prepare the following important information to fill up and submit the online application form for GATE 2022. All the information is tabulated below.

Personal Information · Here, applicants need to enter the name of the candidate, the candidate’s Date of Birth, a valid mobile number, parent’s name as per the same information on the certificate of secondary board examination.
Address · In this field, applicants should mention the address of communication along with the PIN code in details like street number, locality, city, district, state, etc.
Academic Qualification · All the information regarding the degree program must be included in this section.
Paper Name · In this section, the name of the paper of GATE 2022 that the candidate wishes to apply for should be added.
Exam Centre · Under this area, candidates will have to enter four preferences of exam centers from the list.
Documents · When it comes to documents, candidates should upload a scanned colored recent passport size photograph and a scanned signature with the correct format as prescribed by the concerned authority.

Changes Introduced in GATE Eligibility Criteria

 As per the guidelines by IIT Bombay, some major changes in GATE Eligibility Criteria and exam papers subjects were declared last year. Along with the relaxation in academic areas, two new subjects were introduced as well. In the below table, all the modifications for GATE Eligibility Criteria have been mentioned.

GATE Eligibility Certificate

What is GATE Eligibility Certificate?

  • GATE Eligibility certificate defines the final year’s scorecard or mark sheet/Certificate issued by the head of the institution. The document must be in a prescribed format set by the authority. And, also a scanned copy of the certificate of the degree program or provisional certificate. The resolution must be not more than 300KB at the time of uploading it while filling up GATE 2022 Application Form.
  • A certificate issued by the principal needs to be uploaded in the situation when the candidate has not received a final year’s degree or provisional certificate from the respective university/institute. In that situation, a Certificate issued by the head or Principle (for use as the eligibility certificate only for the final year or backlog candidates) can be uploaded. The size of the certificate for GATE Eligibility 2022 must note be less than 10KB. 

 Authorities Empowered to Issue Certificates for GATE 2022

As per GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022, candidates who belong to the following category need to present some important certificates to appear in GATE 2022.

  • SC/ ST certificate (click here for Format and Form)
  • At the time of admission, an OBC certificate is required and mandatory to present but not for appearing in GATE 2022.
  • PWD Certificate will be applicable when a candidate will have more than 40% of disability as per government norms. 

GATE Eligibility for M.Tech Admissions

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 for M.Tech Admissions

Below mentioned are GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022 for seeking admission to M.Tech courses in top colleges in India based on GATE exam.

  • It is mandatory to pass GATE 2022 examination for seeking admission in the M.Tech program offered by IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
  • For admission to different institutes, candidates need to submit a separate online application form.
  • Through GATE COAP Counselling, candidates need to complete the admission process for admission in the MTech program. No candidate will get the offer letter for admission if they do not register at COAP and also the official website of the respective IIT.
  • By registering for the Centralized Counselling Process that is GATE CCMT Counselling, candidates can seek admission in NITs, IIITs and CFTIs. In the CCMT portal, all the candidates from NIT and other participating institutes will be uploaded to the counseling list.

Ans: As per the changes introduced in GATE Eligibility Criteria 2022, candidates with a BDS or M.Pharma degree are also eligible to apply for GATE 2022. Ques: I have backlogs during the qualifying degree program, due to which I did not complete the program. I am currently not studying in college and therefore cannot get a duly signed certificate from HOD/Institute. Which document do I need to upload while filling the GATE application form?

Ans: If you cannot get a duly signed certificate from HOD/Institute then you should submit the final year mark sheet of any one semester, even if there are backlogs in some subjects.

Ques: I have completed my graduation in 2018, but my Institute has still not provided me either with a degree certificate or provisional certificate, which document should I upload as GATE eligibility certificate?

Ans: In such a case, the final year mark sheet (either 7 or 8 semesters) must be uploaded as GATE eligibility document.

Ques: I am in the final year of my qualifying degree program, which certificate do I need to upload as GATE eligibility certificate?

Ans: Final year candidates need to get a Certificate from their HOD/Institute which will act as a GATE eligibility certification during the registration process. 

Ques: I belong to the OBC (non-creamy layer) category. Do I have to upload my category certificate while filling GATE Application Form 2022, if yes, how?

Ans: No. Category certificates are meant only for Indian nationals who wish to avail a concession in the GATE application fee. As per the criterion defined by GATE authority, only SC/ST/PwD candidates and all women candidates are eligible for application fee concession.

Ques: Is the downloaded mark sheet from the internet acceptable as an eligibility certificate for GATE 2022?

Ans: Yes, internet downloaded final year mark sheet of any one semester, which is digitally signed or duly signed with seal by the competent authority (Registrar, Controller of Examination etc.) only, is acceptable as an eligibility certificate for GATE 2022.

Ques: Is there a restriction on the number of attempts in GATE 2022?

Ans: No, there is no restriction on the number of attempts for GATE.

what will be the fee that i may have to pay for two papers? and if i apply for the both paper then how the result will be given either combined or individually?? if i qualify for either of the paper then i may considered as qualified for admission or not?

Hi Milan, This year, candidates will be allowed to choose two papers in the GATE examination. Candidates will have to pay a separate application fee for the second paper. The total fees for both the papers is Rs. 1200. The result will be given individually. In such a case, the final year mark sheet (either of 5 or 6 semesters) must be uploaded as the GATE eligibility document. Upload the mark sheet of at least one semester.

Hi Senna, following is the list of documents that one must have at the time of registration process for GATE 2020:

  • Scanned photograph and signature. 
  • Valid Photo ID (Aadhaar Card/Passport/Driving License/PAN Card/Voter ID/College ID/Employee Identification Card/Notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address).
  • Degree Certificate/Provisional Certificate/Course Completion Certificate 
  • Copy of Mark Sheet of the V /VI /VII semester
  • Final year students must submit Provisional Certificate Letter as per format issued by the Home of Institute/Dean/Registrar/Head of Dept.
  • Candidates in the final year of AMIE have to submit their mark sheet for Section A of AMIE in case of professional equivalent qualifications.
  • Caste Certificate (if applicable) as per given format
  • Disability or PwD Certificate (if applicable)

Hi Shahana, as per you query the stream, there is no stream GATE is for, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is conducted for admission to M.Tech/ Ph.D. and other Government Scholarships/Assistantships in the field of engineering and technology. The exam is conducted annually by IISc Bangalore and 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Roorkee) on a rotational basis.
