HPCET 2023 Eligibility - Qualification, Age, Percentage

HPCET 2023 (Himachal Pradesh Common Entrance Test) is a state-level entrance exam conducted by Himachal Pradesh Technical University for admissions into various undergraduate and post-graduate courses. Candidates seeking admission to technical and professional institutes of Himachal Pradesh can apply for the exam in the first week of March 2023 (tentatively). However, before starting the HPCET 2023 Application Process, it is important for the applicants to check HPCET 2023 Eligibility Criteria and ensure that they satisfy it.

  • In case an applicant is found to be ineligible for the exam, his application may be liable for rejection at any stage of the Admission procedure. Therefore, it is strongly advised to refer to the detailed HPCET 2023 Eligibility Criteria for the specific programme that the candidate wishes to apply for and ascertain that he is eligible for it. 

Certain seats will be reserved for candidates belonging to a minority group or special category. Eligibility Criteria for HPCET 2023

HPCET 2023 Eligibility Criteria for different programmes vary and hence, candidates will need to check specific particulars for the course they want to apply for. HPCET 2023 Eligibility Criteria for engineering courses is provided below:

B. Tech (Lateral Entry) Diploma from an AICTE approved institution with minimum 45% marks (40% for reserved category) in appropriate branch of Engineering / Technology. , B.Sc. Degree from a recognized University with at least 45% marks (40% for reserved category) and passed 10+2 standard with mathematics as a subject. , Students with B.Sc. degree required to clear the subjects of Engineering Graphics / Engineering Drawing and Engineering Mechanics of the first year Engineering Program along with the second year subjects. , Students from B.Sc. Stream to be considered only after filling the supernumerary seats in this category with students belonging to the Diploma stream.
M. Tech · Recognized Bachelor‘s degree or equivalent in the relevant field · 50% marks (45% marks for reserved category) in the Bachelor’s Degree

It is also possible for the candidates to join the second year of some engineering degree programmes directly, provided that they pursued the first year diploma course elsewhere.

In case the candidate possesses a diploma and wishes to gain lateral entry for an engineering course, he must refer to the list of diploma courses that are valid for the purpose of lateral entry through HPCET 2023. This information is summarised in a table below.

Check HPCET 2023 Exam Pattern

Eligibility criteria for the courses other than engineering are tabulated below:

B.Pharmacy Candidate must have passed 10+2 with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects along with one of the Mathematics/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subject securing at least 45% marks (40% reserved category) in the above subjects taken together. Minimum age limit is 17 years
B. Pharmacy (Ayurveda) 10+2 passed candidates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as compulsory subjects securing at least 45% marks (40% for reserved category) in the above subjects taken together.
BBA Candidates who have passed 10+2 examination in any stream are eligible to apply. Further, the candidate should have obtained at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidate belonging to SC/ST category) in the qualifying examination.
BCA Candidates who have passed 10+2 examination in any stream from a Board recognized or established by Central/State Government through legislation shall be eligible to apply. Candidate should have obtained at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidate belonging to SC/ST category) in the qualifying examination.
BHMCT/ B.Sc. (HM& CT) Candidates must have passed 10+2 examination in any stream from a recognised board are eligible to apply. Further, the candidate should have obtained at least 50% marks (45% in case of candidate belonging to SC/ST category) in the qualifying examination.
M.Sc. Physics All those candidates who have passed bachelor degree in science with at least 50% marks (45% in case of reserved categories)in aggregate in the three years of degree or honours in the subject concerned i.e. Physics.
M. Pharmacy Candidates must have passed bachelor degree in Pharmacy or equivalent from recognized University securing at least 50% marks (45% for reserved category) at the qualifying examination.
MBA/ MBA (T & HM) Candidates must have passed bachelor’s degree from recognized University with minimum three years duration securing at least 50% marks (45% for reserved category) at the qualifying examination.

HPCET 2023 Eligibility for Foreign Candidates / NRI

Candidates belonging to foreign nationalities or those candidates who are Non-Resident Indians (NRI) can also apply for HPCET 2023. They must check the eligibility criteria of different institutes in this regard and ensure that they satisfy them.

It may be noted that the NRIs and Foreign Students need not appear for HPCET 2023 Examination to be considered for admission. A merit list based on the marks obtained by them in the qualifying examination will be used to provide admission.

  • The minimum HPCET 2023 eligibility criteria for such NRI and Foreign students for admission into HPTU courses are the same as those for Indian students for each program.
  • An applicant will be categorized as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) if he fulfills the definition provided by the Income Tax Law of India.
  • On the other hand, a foreign candidate will only be considered as such, if he holds a valid foreign passport.
  • In addition, he/she must possess a valid visa issued by a competent authority of the Indian Government, clarifying the reason to stay.

HPCET 2023 Reservation

Out of all available seats for admission through HPCET 2023, some are set aside under various quotas and for different categories. The candidates must have complete knowledge regarding HPCET 2023 Reservation scheme before they apply for the exam.

The first category is the All India Quota (AIQ) and seats under this AIQ are filled by candidates belonging to any State or Union Territory (UT) including Himachal Pradesh.

The next category is HP State Quota and these seats are filled by students who have a valid Himachali Bona Fide.

Seats are also reserved for NRI candidates and foreign nationals. Apart from this, there are also management seats in private institutions. Supernumerary and lateral entry seats are also available. The detailed break-up of reservation under various categories is provided below.

HPCET 2023 State Quota Seats


The seats available under Himachal Pradesh State Quota(HPSQ) are further divided according to vertical reservation criteria and horizontal reservation criteria. These divisions are based on minority categories and other special categories.

The HPSQ has 65% of total sanctioned seats and this also includes one seat under Beti Hai Anmol Scheme. This scheme is for female candidates who are single child of their parents and have a valid Himachal Pradesh state domicile. Under this scheme, one seat is reserved for such eligible candidates in each institution.
