JEE Main Physical Chemistry Preparation Tips

The most important topic for JEE Main in Physical Chemistry is Mole concept. Many reactions such as Redox Reaction are based on the Mole concept. Thus, this topic should be clearly understood to gain more marks.

In Atomic Structure, one's formulae and basic concepts should be clear as many questions are frequently asked from this chapter in JEE Main. Essential topics in this chapter are Quantum Numbers, the Wavelength of Electronic Transition and Ionisation Energy.

Gaseous State and Solid state along with topics like Van Der Waals equation, Kinetic Theory of Gases and Types of Molecular Velocity should also be crystal clear to the candidates to achieve high scores in JEE. In fact, the following topics have equal weightage in JEE MAINS:

  1. Solutions
  2. Electrochemistry & redox Reactions
  3. Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure
  4. Chemical Thermodynamics
  5. Equilibrium
  6. Surface Chemistry
  7. Chemical Kinetics

Around 8-12 questions in Physical Chemistry are usually asked from these topics. However, it is important to understand the concepts here before you actually begin to solve the problems. The tips to be followed during preparation for NEET Physical Chemistry are given below -

  • Read the chapters from NCERT.
  • Make a note of important formulas on a sheet of paper.
  • Read the same chapters from appropriate reference books.
  • Understand how the formulas are applied.
  • Add extra details from the reference books to your notes.
  • Start answering questions on your own.
  • Do your revisions in the same sequence.

For physical chemistry, first go through the concept and then understand the formulas. Resolve the question on each formula. Make a small notebook and make a list of all the formulas chapter wise in that notebook. There are chapters in Inorganic Chemistry which once mastered, this entire portion of chemistry will become easier. One of the biggest tips for studying inorganic chemistry is to properly learn the periodic table. Then you will not be leaving even a single question unanswered from this portion in JEE. To easily learn the table, use abbreviations or songs {Example- Oh (O-Oxygen) saan (S- Sulphur) se (Se- Selenium) te (Te- Tellurium)} to make learning more fun and interesting.

Last Minute Preparation Tips

JEE Main Chemistry Last Minute Preparation Tips

  • Make revision or short notes for last minute preparation along with flashcards for equations and formulas.
  • Revise on a weekly or daily basis, dividing the time equally to physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry.
  • Usually conceptual questions dominate JEE Main Chemistry question paper, so while revising remember not to indulge in core numerical problems and focus on concepts.
  • Make NCERT an exemplary book for Chemistry preparation in JEE Main especially for inorganic chemistry.
  • Practice Organic as much as you can along with clarity in theoretical concepts.
  • Revise exclusive topics in Chemistry like environmental chemistry and biomolecules.
  • Don't be tense in the last moments- remember that every question holds +4 marks and every incorrect response holds -1. So if even 2 questions are incorrect you will lose 10 marks in total which will lower your rank by 2000.
  • Cover up easy topics in physical chemistry first to boost confidence; like redox reaction, electrochemistry, solid state, chemical kinetics etc.
  • Revise periodic tables on a daily basis as it is somewhat difficult to retain.
  • Lastly stay calm, get good sleep and eat healthy. Overstressing can lead to unnecessary pressure and bad performance.

Right Way to Score 100+ in JEE Main Chemistry

Focus on the Right Study Material

As they say, less is more, so do not spend unnecessary time on books that seem too difficult or not relevant to JEE. Hence there is no need to master Atkins Physical chemistry by heart, read a couple of books repeatedly rather than 5 books once.

  • Initiate with NCERT and keep one reference book for each section.
  • For inorganic chemistry NCERT + Past year question bank are enough
  • For organic chemistry the fat book by Wiley's Solomon is enough.

Understand the Mole Concept

Several students ignore the mole concept and give up easily. Though the topic plays a crucial role in physical chemistry. Get comfortable with it and solve the questions easily.

Practice and Retain Daily

Candidates who score high in chemistry have good retaining capability. And retention comes with regular practice. Chemistry questions in JEE Main seem to be repeated with change in numerical values. Make a habit of solving at least 50 objective type questions daily.

Manage Time During the Exam

Spend the least amount of time possible in the chemistry section. Time should not be divided equally in 1 hour for each section. Try to wrap up the chemistry section in less than 40 minutes, the additional time can be utilised in revision or solving lengthy mathematics questions.

Eliminate and Answer in Organic/Inorganic Chemistry

Before ticking an option and arriving at a conclusion use the trick to eliminate an answer. This can especially be helpful in organic and inorganic chemistry. Eliminate a few answers and then answer.

Approximations in Physical Chemistry

The JEE Chemistry section is not designed to test a candidate's mathematical or calculation skills. Thus smart play is important. So unless the options are too close to each other use the closest answer. This will help save time and increase speed.

Attempt Chemistry Section First

It is highly advisable by JEE Main toppers and experts to solve the chemistry section initially before maths and physics. As chemistry is deemed to be less time consuming and easy it can be wrapped up easily. If mathematics or physics is picked up first it consumes a lot of time and at the end, chemistry is compromised.

JEE Main vs Advanced

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced Chemistry Topic Wise Comparison

Candidates who attempt JEE Main wish to clear it and make it to the advanced level. Thus a comprehensive preparation for both the exams should be kept in mind.
