JELET 2023 Exam Pattern will be released by WBJEEB (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board) where details on the syllabus, marking scheme, distribution of marks, duration, medium, cut off etc., will be given. JELET 2023 is scheduled on June 10, 2023

  • The paper will contain 100 multiple choice questions, each carrying 1 mark.
  • Candidates will lose ¼ marks for every incorrect response; no response will yield zero marks. Check JELET Marking Scheme
  • Two hours will be the maximum time given to attempt the question paper.
  • The question will differ for candidates on the basis of their last qualifying examination. 
  • Students holding a diploma in engineering/technology are advised to prepare according to the diploma syllabus while B.Sc candidates have only Mathematics as their syllabus.

JELET (Joint Entrance Examination for Lateral Entry) is an entrance exam for aspirants seeking admission into the 2nd year (3rd semester) of an engineering undergraduate course. The exam will be held only in offline mode. Candidates should make sure that they fulfil the eligibility criteria before applying for the examination.

JELET 2023 Exam Pattern

JELET 2023 exam will be conducted only in English language. The paper will consist of only objective type questions. Number of questions will be 100 and candidates will have to complete the examination in two hours. JELET 2023 is an offline exam, so applicants are advised to fill the OMR carefully. There are separate question papers for different streams.

Candidates having diploma in engineering or technology will face 70 common questions, the rest 30 will be based on their diploma specialization. All 100 questions will be from Mathematics for B.Sc students and all 100 questions will be asked from Pharmacy for candidates with diploma in Pharmacy.

JELET 2023 Marking Scheme

JELET 2023 Exam will follow a simple marking scheme. There are 100 questions of total 100 marks. 

  • All questions will be multiple choice having four options.
  • Only one option will be correct out of the four.
  • Candidate will be awarded 1 mark for every right answer.
  • 1/4 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
  • No marks for unanswered questions.
  • If more than one response is marked in a single question, it will be treated as incorrect and 0.25 marks will be deducted.
  • No special category of questions according to the subject or section.

JELET 2023 Syllabus

JELET 2023 Syllabus varies on the basis of candidate’s qualification and stream.

  1. For students with an Engineering diploma: The syllabus consists of the prescribed diploma syllabus of The West Bengal State Council of Technical Education.
    The topics are:
  1. Engineering Mathematics:
  • MATRIX & VECTOR- Concept of vector -Addition and subtraction of vectors - Multiplication of a vector by a scalar - Position vector of a point - Ratio formula - Rectangular resolution of a vector - Dot and cross product - Geometrical interpretation-Distributive law .
  • NUMERICAL METHODS- Meaning of interpolation - Difference table - Newton's forward Interpolation formula (no deduction), Introduction to numerical integration - Formulae for composite trapezoidal and Simpson's 1/3 rule (no deduction), Numerical solution of non-linear equations - Formula for Newton-Raphson method (no deduction), Numerical solution of system of linear equation - Gauss-Elimination Method (no deduction).
  • DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS- Definition - Order and degree of a differential equation - Differential equations of 1st order and 1st degree, Separation of variables, Homogeneous differential equations - Equations reducible to the homogeneous form, Exact differential equations - equations reducible to the exact form - problems Linear equations - Bernoulli's equations, Differential equations of 2nd order with constant co-efficient - Complementary function and particular integral.
  • PARTIAL DIFFERENTIATION- Function of two or more variables - Definition and meaning of partial derivatives (1st order). Homogeneous functions - Euler's theorem on homogeneous functions (no deduction).
  • PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS- Introduction - Random experiment - Sample space - Events Classical and axiomatic definition of probability, Addition and multiplication theorem - Related problems. Statistics - Frequency distribution, Measure of central tendency - Mean - Median - Mode - Standard deviation - Simple problems
  1.  Electrical Technology:
  • KIRCHHOFF’S LAW- Kirchhoff’s voltage and current laws, Star-delta transformations - Simple problems on all topics.
  • AC FUNDAMENTALS- Concept & significance of R.M.S. value, peak value, average value, crest factor and form factor of sinusoidal voltage/current - Equation of instantaneous value of sinusoidal voltage/current - Simple problems on all.
  • AC SERIES CIRCUIT- R-L & R-C AC series circuit (no deduction, only the expressions of voltage, current & power for sinusoidal sources), power factor, power triangle simple problems
  • STORAGE CELL, TRANSFOF5MER, MOTORS ETC- Basic Principle of: Storage cell, DC motors, Transformer, A.C. generators & motors (No deduction & problems).
  • MAGNETIC CIRCUIT- Concept on magnetic circuit, Definitions and units of magnetic flux, m.m.t. and reluctance, analogy with electrical circuit, simple problems.
  • MOTOR STARTER- Need of motor starter mentioning some names useful for D.C. motors & A.C. motors.
  • MOTORS FOR INDUSTRIAL USES- Simple Electrical Circuit for motor installation, using block diagram of different components.
  • POWER GENERATION, TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION- Brief idea about the power generation, transmission and distribution using block diagram of different stages.
  • VOLTAGE STABILISER & UPS SYSTEM- Brief idea about the operational principle of voltage stabilizer and UPS system (no description of internal circuit)
  • HOUSE WIRING- Simple idea house wiring starting from commencement of supply, using necessary diagram, role of fuses / MCB, fault finding concept.
  • LIGHTING SCHEMES- Types of lighting scheme and factors considered for designing lighting schemes i.e. illumination level, uniformity of illumination, colour of light, glare, mounting height, spacing between luminaries, colour of surrounding walls etc.
  • WATTMETER & MEGGAR- Uses & connection diagram of Wattmeter - Use of Megara with circuit diagram.
  • ELECTRICAL ENERGY MEASUREMENT- Electrical energy measurement (no mathematical deduction & description of apparatus) - circuit diagram for single-phase energy-meter connection.
  1. Computer Application:
  • INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER- Brief history of evolution of computers, Various components of computer (brief knowledge), Hardware-CPU, inputs output system, primary memory, and secondary memory, Peripherals devices - Printers, plotter, scanners, digitals cameras, and web cam sound card & speaker systems, dicta phone, Software Operating system, system software like compilers and device drivers, and various application softwares (definitions only).
  • INFORMATION REPRSESENTATION- Number System : Binary, Octal & Hexadecimal, Conversion of number systems, signed and unsigned representation, Binary arithmetic & compliments, Character codes: ASCII. BCD & Grey codes
  • SOFTWARE CONCEPTS- Classification of Software systems-system software and application software, Basic concepts of compilers, interpreters, assemblers and device drives, Operating system - Single user, multi user, and graphical user interfaces and characters user interfaces, Case studies: MS-DOS, Windows
  • INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING- Algorithm and flowchart, Different types of programming languages - machine level, assembly level and high-level languages (basic concepts only), Brief introduction to different high-level languages including C, Basics of C-Language, Branching and loping statements, Arrays and user-defined functions
  • COMPUTER NETWORKING AND INTERNET- Basics of Computer Networking - LAN, MAN, WAN (definitions only), Client - Server architecture (elementary level), Internetworking concepts of World Wide Web, domain name system emails, Web browsing, use of search engines, web site hosting (elementary level)

  1. For students with Bachelor of Science degree: A separate question paper on Mathematics will be set, based on B.Sc Mathematics pass course syllabus of the University of Calcutta.
  2. For students with Pharmacy diplomas: The syllabus is the diploma level syllabus prescribed by the Pharmacy Council of India.

Important Instructions

JELET will be a pen and paper based examination and an OMR sheet will be provided to mark the answers. The sheets will be examined by specially designed machines, so proper care should be taken while marking the responses.

Keep in mind:

  • Candidates will have to darken the appropriate circle using a black or blue ball point pen.
  • Use of pencil is prohibited.
  • Incomplete or improper filling of the bubble will lead to wrong or partial reading of the response.
  • Cross marks, tick marks and, dot marks are not allowed.
  • Do not overwrite or erase a marked response.
  • Scratching or writing is not permitted on the OMR sheet.
  • Use of White ink or Whitener is impermissible.
