MGU CAT 2022 Eligibility, Reservation Criteria and Documents

MGU CAT is an entrance exam conducted by Mahatma Gandhi University for admission to postgraduate programmes. To appear for the exam, candidates first have to meet the eligibility requirements. There will be different eligibility criteria for different courses.

Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can fill the application till April 7,2022 in online mode. This year, MGU CAT 2022 will be conducted on May 28 – 29, 2022.

Also, seat reservation will be applicable for certain categories. Foreign candidates and candidates with disabilities can claim for reservation if they meet the reservation requirements. Check Reservation Criteria

This article is aimed at discussing various eligibility criteria for MGU CAT exam and the reservation offered by the university in detail. Also it describes the documents and certificates that are to be produced for claiming reservation.


MGU CAT 2022 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who meet eligibility requirements can fill MGU CAT Application Form. The exam has different eligibility criteria for different courses. All the eligibility criteria are mentioned below:

  1. For M.Sc in Physics:
  • Candidates must have done his under graduation in physics.
  • Candidate must have secured an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For M.Sc in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biophysics:
  • Candidates must have done his B.sc in botany, .zoology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Micro-biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry or Physics
  • Candidate must have secured an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For M.sc Environment Science and Disaster Management:
  • Candidates must have done B.Sc with any subject.
  • Candidate must have secured an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For M.Sc in Chemistry (Inorganic/organic/physical/polymer)
  • Candidate must have done B.Sc in chemistry with mathematics and physics as subsidiaries.
  • Candidate must have secured an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For MA in Malayalam:
  • Candidate must have done bachelor’s degree in any subject with an aggregate of 45% or CGPA 1.8 in part III.
  • Candidate must have done bachelors in arts or science with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For MA English:
  • Candidate must have done bachelor’s degree in any subject with an aggregate of 45% or CGPA 1.8 in part III.
  • Candidate must have done bachelors in arts or science with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For MA politics and international relations, MA politics and human rights and MA politics ( public governance and governance )
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree in Economics / Politics / History /  Law with an aggregate of 45% or CGPA 1.8 in part III
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree in English/ Sociology / Anthropology / Psychology / Geography / Philosophy / Commerce with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For MA history and MA anthropology:
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree in Social Sciences with an aggregate of 45% or CGPA 1.8 in part III
  1. For MA Gandhian Studies and MA Development Studies
  • Candidate must have done bachelor’s degree in any subject with an aggregate of 45% or CGPA 1.8 in part III.
  1. For M Sc Disability Studies and Rehabilitation Sciences:
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree in arts with an aggregate of 45% or CGPA 1.8 in part III.
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree in science with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III
  1. For M Sc Computer Science:
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree Computer Science / Computer Application / BCA or any other B Sc degree with Computer Science as the main subject with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For Master of Tourism and Travel Management (with specialization in Aviation Management Tour Operations and Health Tourism).
  • Candidate must have done bachelors degree in subjects concerned with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III from any recognized university or Mahatma Gandhi University.
  1. For LLM:
  • Candidate must have done LLB with an aggregate of 50% or CGPA 2 in part III.
  1. For M. Ed. In Language Education:
  • Candidate must have done B. Ed with an aggregate if 55% or CGPA  2.2

NOTE: The verfication of the eligibility criteria would be done only at the time of MGU CAT Counselling.


MGU CAT Reservation Criteria

MGU CAT exam will also have some seats reserved for the candidates. But that reservation also has certain criteria. Candidates need to meet those requirements in order to take advantage of reserved seats. There are 3 kinds of reservation provided to the candidates. All these are explained below in detail:

1. Reservation for persons with disabilities

Candidates with any kind of disabilities have to clear entrance test first. After that, they can claim reservation. Some of the important things about reservation are:

  • 3% of the total seats in all the programmes are reserved for this category.
  • One-third of the total 3% is reserved for candidates who are blind, deaf or orthopedically challenged respectively.
  • Candidates who are more than 405 disable could claim reservation only.

2. Special Reservation

The special reservation category mainly consists of 3 different sub-categories.

  1. Economically Backward among Forward Communities (EBFC):

Some of the important things about reservation are:

  • 7.5% of the total seats in all non-professional courses are reserved for this category.
  • 6.5% of the total seats in all professional courses are reserved for this category.
  • If no seats are available in this quota, the candidates will be allotted general seats.
  1. Teacher’s quota:

Some of the important things about this reservation are:

  • Only one seat is reserved under this quota.
  • This is for M. Ed only.
  • Children of the teachers who are teaching in Govt. /Aided Colleges/Schools on a regular basis can claim for this reservation.
  1. Foreign students quota:

Some of the important things about this reservation are:

  • 2% of seats are reserved for this category.
  • Foreign students can claim for this even without entrance.
  • This reservation can be claimed on self financing as well as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) attached to the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.

3. Mandatory reservation

This is the third type of reservation by MGU CAT 2022. Under this, some of the mandatory reservations are provided to some categories. The distribution is as follows:

  1. For professional programmes:
Categories Percentage of seats reserved

Muslims 7%
Latin Catholics and not Anglo Indians 1%
Other backward Christians 1%
Other backward Hindus 3%
Scheduled castes 15%
Scheduled tribes 7.5%
  1. For non-professional programmes:

Category Wise Important Documents for MGU CAT

Candidates willing to claim reservation are required to submit the below-mentioned documents at the time of counselling and final admission process. Failing to carry any of the below-mentioned categories may lead to the debarment of candidates.

  • Candidates claiming reservation under disability certificate of disability by medical board constituted for the same.
  • Candidates claiming reservation under Economically Backward among Forward Communities must submit BPL certificates.
  • Candidates claiming reservation under teachers quota must submit (Certificates countersigned by AEO / DEO / DD
  • Candidates claiming reservation under Foreign Students Quota must submit original application along with the copies of below-given certificates:
  1. Curriculum vitae.
  2. Copies of mark lists/transcripts of all examinations undergone.
  3. Two copies of recent passport size photographs.
  4. Conduct certificate from the Head of the Institution last studied.
  5.  Reference letters from two persons who have intimate knowledge of the academic capabilities of the candidates.
  6. Copy of Passport.
  • Candidates claiming reservation under mandatory reservation must submit the following documents:
  1. ‘Community’ and ‘Income Certificates’ if the candidate is from ‘Socially and Educationally Backward Classes’ (SEBC)
  2. caste/community certificate from the Tahsildar if the candidate is from Scheduled Castes /Scheduled Tribes
