NMAT 2020 Language Skills Preparation: Syllabus, Best Books, Sample Questions

NMAT 2020 Language Skills or Verbal Ability section is an easy - moderate section of this exam meant to test the candidate’s command over the english language and constructive thinking ability. 

Out of 120 minutes, candidates must solve Language Skills questions in 28 minutes which is a little more than 1/5th of the total time. Similar to other sections of this paper like NMAT Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning, no penalty of negative marking is applicable.

  • The difficulty level of the Language Skills section has risen from last year.
  • Attempting about 24 - 28 questions would be an ideal attempt for Language skills. 
  • The Cutoff for NMAT 2020 examination is expected to lie between 208- 210, while that for Language Skills section can range in between 50 to 57.
  • Last year, the total number of questions in the Language Skills section was 32. This year, the number of questions has increased to 36.
  • This year, the number of questions will be more but the duration would be the lowest, i.e., 28 minutes.

Before discussing the Language Skills section of NMAT Exam in detail, let us understand the breakup of this entire paper. 

  • NMAT paper is divided into three sections, i.e., Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning.
  • NMAT Paper is based on the pattern of CAT and MAT exams. Time limit for each section is predetermined, Candidates can select any section according to their preferred choice.
  • Candidates have the option of reserving the answers which is available only till the allotted sectional time.
  • The number of questions in the Language Skills section is 32 and the time allotted is 22 minutes. The score may range in between 0- 96.
  • The Quantitative Skills section has 48 questions and the time allotted is 60 minutes. The score may range in between 0- 144.
  • The number of questions in the Logical Reasoning section is 40 and the time allotted is 38 minutes. The score may range in between 0- 120.

NMAT 2019 Language Skills Section Analysis

  • The Language Skills section of NMAT Paper was more or less straightforward. The questions were quite simple and direct. 
  • The level of the paper was easy to moderate.
  • There were 2 Reading Comprehension Passages of 450-500 words with 4 questions each. 
  • Each of the passages were in a lucid language and questions asked were quite easy. 
  • Non RC questions were based mostly on grammar and vocabulary, which were easy to attempt.

  • The NMAT Language Skills section of NMAT Paper 2018 did not have questions from vocabulary.
  • Most reading comprehension problems were idea based which could have been solved by application of logic.
  • The pattern of 2018 was more or less predictable.
