Coaching vs Self Study

Each student reaches their full potential under different circumstances. Go though the pros and cons of coaching vs self study to figure out the best plan for you.

Coaching

  • Pros
    • Structure provided to the preparation process by experts in the field
    • Easy medium to solve doubts
    • Most coaching centres conduct their own mock tests
  • Cons
    • You may become dependent on coaches instead of trying to find solutions on your own
    • The pace of coaching institutes might not be suited to everybody

Self Study

  • Pros
    • You can study at your own pace
    • You can allocate time to your preparations which is tailored to your needs
    • You learn to tackle problems on your own, thus getting a clearer understanding of the concepts
  • Cons
    • If you are stuck with something, you can’t avail the help of a professional coach
    • You have to make your own structured timetable and stick to it without any external motivation

Time Management

  • Time management is an important skill that must be acquired in any exam. Most students usually complain about insufficient time for finishing exams.
  • Since each paper only provides 2 hours, you need to be agile and smart while managing your answering time.
  • Practicing time management will be very helpful because if you manage to complete the entire paper before the end of the time, you will automatically be better off than most of the other candidates.
  • This will give you time to quickly revise what you answered.
  • To understand the required pace, try mock tests and follow the official time limit of the test. This will allow you to know and practice attempting a paper within a timeframe.

First attempt what you already know

  • A good rule of thumb while attempting papers, if to first tackle the questions which are easy for you.
  • This will not only boost your confidence, but also help you save a lot of time.
  • Do this even while practicing at home. It will give you a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses, which you can then work on balancing.

Maintain physical and mental balance

Many students neglect their physical fitness when preparing for entrance exams, which may lead to a decline in academic performance. Therefore, exercising every day and maintaining a good sleep schedule and eating well are the keys to keeping your mind and body ready for the exam.
