    Chinese University of Hongkong (CUHK) is the largest and only Hong Kong institution with 14 Rhodes Scholars in 9 colleges from the unique collegiate system. CUHK is awarded No.1 most innovative universities in Hongkong in 2016-2019 by Reuters Asia Pacific. 

    The university enrolls more than 20,000 students every year including more than 4000 international students from nearly 50 countries.

    Nearly 13,000 postgraduate students, including international, are enrolled in the Chinese University of Hong Kong Graduate School as per the 2018-19 data set. The Graduate School offers 220 graduate programs, postgraduate diplomas, Ph.Ds, and certificates through 55 Graduate Divisions. More than 70 major undergraduate programs are offered here. 

    The CUHK acceptance rate has been seen declining over the years because of the large demand from Chinese and Indian Students. 

    • The academic year for 2020 will start in early September 2020
    • International students are not eligible for institutional financial aid. However, outstanding international students are eligible for entrance scholarships.
    • Outstanding international applicants meeting the university specified requirements of GCE-AL / International-AL, IB, Cambridge Pre-U, HKALE, associate degree / higher diploma are eligible for an “Admission with Advanced Standing” option.
    • Applicants desiring “Admission with Advanced Standing" are required to indicate in the application.
    • Applicants selected for an “Admission with Advanced Standing” have their graduation units reduced up to 24 units while others will automatically compete in the regular round.
    • Only one application is required for admission purposes. No separate application is required for subsequent selection rounds.
    • CUHK’s undergraduate programs are for a period for 4 years and require completion of 123 units

    COVID-19 Update:

    To reduce the risk of spreading the novel coronavirus, CUHK provides online teaching to all undergraduate students from 17 February 2020. Students with the difficulty to access the required hardware for this special teaching and learning arrangement, the Student Notebook Loan Scheme has been launched on 10 February 2020.

    The Chinese University of Hong Kong Application Deadlines

    International applications are required to submit the completed online applications to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid before the deadlines via the online application system to allow enough time for application processing.

    The Chinese University of Hong Kong International Students Admission

    The Chinese University of Hong Kong offers admission to international students in both undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the Faculty of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Science, and Social Science. They are required to fulfill the academic, English language proficiency requirements, and other program-specific requirements. International applicants should upload the supporting documents along with the online application.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Officially certified/original copies of academic records or transcripts. By 1 September of the year in which admission is sought, candidates should possess any of the following qualifications: 
      • GCE-AL / International-AL (3AL / 2AL+2AS) 
      • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with 30 points out of 45, 4 points in each subject
      • High School Qualifications (SAT/ACT + 2 SAT Subject Tests, in the USA) (CBSE/ISC,in India)
    • Officially certified/original copies of academic records or transcripts
    • Official English translations accompanied with original documents
    • Personal statement
    • Financial affidavits
    • Medical history form
    • Copies of Passport/entry permit
    • Photocopy of HongKong Identity card/other identity documents

    Official Academic Transcripts

    • A photocopy of each of the Hong Kong Identity Card or other Identity Card
    • Passport, Dependant Visa or Student Visa, and Entry Permit, if applicable. 
    • Personal Statement (Resume / Curriculum Vitae (optional)) 
    • Letter of Recommendation (online or by hardcopy)
    • 2-5 References for Postgraduate admission
    • Public Exam Score Reports: SAT/ ACT scores (or equivalence) for undergraduate admission and GRE/ GMAT for some Postgraduate admission.
    • Photo, and Proof of adequate financial resources for visa application.

    English Proficiency Test Scores for International students

    To demonstrate proficiency in the English language, international students must fulfill the following minimum test score requirements to enroll in courses on a full-time basis. The minimum test score requirements are tabulated as follows:

    Visa Process for International Students

    Hong Kong is open to international students. The acceptance rate of Hong Kong student visas is around 90% and, honestly speaking, there is not much hustle of acquiring a student visa for Hong Kong. 

    On receipt of the acceptance letter from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the students can apply for the visa at the earliest by contacting the Global Affairs Office (GAO). The application form from the GAO is sent to the Immigration Department for processing. The completed application form with the required supporting documents can be uploaded after paying the visa application fee. The students can attend the visa interview on the scheduled dates with the supporting documents. The usual processing time of a Hong Kong student visa is 6-8 weeks.

    Following forms are required for visa application:

    • Form ID 995A, filled by the applicant
    • Form ID 995B, filled by the sponsor

    Both forms can be downloaded online. It is important to declare a financial support statement from a local sponsor before the visa application. 

    • Once the offer letter is issued to international students from the University, the applicant is required to connect with The Global Affairs Office. 
    • The GAO will send the application to the immigration department of the HKSAR for processing.
    • The application form will then be completed by uploading the supporting documents and paying the visa application fees.
    • The documents that students need to submit while filing student visa application are as follows:
      • A photocopy of the admission offer letter by the University.
      • Photocopies of travel document example, passport/identity card.
      • Evidence of Financial support.
      • One passport-sized recent photograph
      • Photocopy of official academic transcripts (High School Qualifications, English Language Proficiency Test Scores, etc)
    • Attend the interview.
    • Visa will be sent by GAO directly to the applicant, once ready.

    Bachelors degree programs are offered in the majors of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, and Social Science

    Eligibility Criteria:

    International students with exceptional achievements are required to complete at least 25 years of age and either of the following academic qualifications by September 1 to be eligible for admission:

    • GCE-AL / International-AL : 3 AL/ 2 AL +2AS passes in one sitting
    •  IB:30 points out of 45
    • High School graduation diploma with SAT/ACT plus 2 SAT subject tests

The university is selective and the admission decision is based on educational background and academic excellence in addition to the performance in the interview attended.
