Master of Chirurgiae or MCh is a specialized and most advanced postdoctoral/ doctoral degree in surgery. This 3 years course is the highest degree in the field of surgical science in the Indian Medical system.

The basic eligibility criteria required to pursue MCh degree is an MS (Master of Surgery), MD (Doctor of Medicine) or any other postgraduate degree recognized by the Medical Council of India, and admission is done purely on the basis of performance in the NEET SS exam.

This course is mostly pursued by junior doctors and professionals who want to advance their clinical and research skills by increasing their subject knowledge and medical practice, so that they possess the right skills that are expected out of a senior level doctor.

Alert: The registrations for NEET SS 2020 will start in the first week of May 2020.

In India, more than 120 colleges (both private & government) offer this high level course with the average fees of around INR 60,000 per year.

Following are considered the best Master of Chirurgiae colleges in India according to the NIRF ranking:

NIRF Ranking College Name Location Admission Process Average Total Fees
1 AIIMS New Delhi AIIMS MCh Exam+ Personal Interview INR 6,875
3 Christian Medical College Vellore NEET SS Counselling INR 497,700
8 Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER)  Pondicherry JIPMER MCh Exam+ Personal Interview INR 11,115

11 Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education & Research Chennai NEET SS Counselling INR 66,00,000
14 Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) New Delhi NEET SS Counselling INR 15,000

The fees is comparatively a lot lesser in the government colleges and you can complete the MCh course in less than INR 1 Lakhs,  but in private colleges such as Ramaiah Medical College & Kasturba Medical College it could be around INR 20 LPA per year.

Hence, doctors prefer to pursue MCh degree from a government college rather than a private college because of low fee structure and higher opportunities.

The main MCh specializations are General Surgery, Anatomy, Cardiac Surgery, ENT, Plastic Surgery, Neuro Surgery, among others which can land you various jobs in the government hospitals after training in a relevant specialization.

Faculty :

The faculty is no less than the best. The teachers are very educated, knowledgeable, and have clinical practice. All the teachers have practiced as doctors that makes the situations in the book too real and it becomes very easy to understand. They moreover are very familiar and treat us as families and sometimes call us at their staff flats in case of festivals.

Alumni/Alumna :

The senior-junior bond system is very good, the seniors are very helpul they pass on the notes and question papers too. Also annual alumni association meet is held every year where the passouts come who are giving their service in different hospitals tell their stories with their patients that seems very inspiring.

Course Curriculum Overview :

MBBS course curriculum is no way easy we have to stay awake the whole night to complete our studies. Whole course is based upon research, practicals, case studies and a lot of practice. Whole course is divided into 9 semesters ,each semester have both theory as well as practical papers.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Course curriculum is good but improvements need to be done so as to include latest developments and more focus should be given on research facilities. The faculty is a bit disappointing, the teachers have immense knowledge but are too busy in gossip, 80% of the syllabus is self-learnt by the students. KEM has a good name but only the Faculty of Physiotherapy needs to be blamed, other depts do their job well. Of the 10 teachers in the dept, only 4 are good that too if they are in good mood.

Campus Life :

Way better than expected. Students who are interested in sports will really love the campus, we have courts for almost all the major college level sports both indoor as well as outdoor. The next best thing is our completely air conditioned library, medical journals, reference books on almost all the topics will be available here. Plus the ample space for reading or studying is massive boon. The infrastructure sorts of lessens the pain caused by the more than incompetent faculty.

College Events :

Seth GS Medical College keeps on hosting multiple academic as well as cultural events throughout the year. Be it Quiz, Talent competition, Paper presentation or Fashion shows, GSites excel in all of them. All the events lead to the Mega Medical fest called as AAVISHKAAR, a 4 day gala filled with lots of fun, competitive games and thrilling entertainment. Medicos from all over Maharashtra and India come to participate in multiple events or just to enjoy the fest.
