It was founded in 1835 by the British Government with the purpose to train the youth in the field of medicine irrespective of creed and caste. The college has one of the oldest and biggest libraries in Bengal with a total number of books is around 22,000, every day more than 800 books are issued by the library.
Originally built in 1707, it was named Presidency Hospital, the first hospital of Calcutta. In 1957 the institute gets its original name, it is the Post Graduate Medical College in the Eastern part of India. The institute offers postgraduate, undergraduate, and post-doctoral courses, paramedical courses, nursing courses, and specialist medical diplomas and degrees.
The institute has been founded by a famous Nationalist doctor R.G. Kar. During British rule, the native doctors of India were discriminated against and humiliated by the British doctors. When Dr. R.G. Kar returned to India from the UK, he decided to open a non-official medical institute with 8 other doctors motivated by the same nationalist movement. In 1887 “Calcutta Medical School” was founded later in 1948 its name was changed to “R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital”
