After hearing a batch of petitions challenging the government's order to cancel the arrears exams, the High Court of Madras kept universities from declaring all passes without conducting the tests.
While most of the universities have implemented the GO, Anna University, which has not taken any decisions, will hold back-to-back online exams.
"Registration of students in the current semester has already been completed. Similarly, the registration of arrears is to be carried out by the colleges for the November/December examinations. The web portal is open and colleges are requested to complete the registration on or before December 10," said a circular from the examination controller.
The university plans to conduct a 60-minute online screening test for all students for the upcoming semester exams following the government's nod.
Across the state, there are more than 5 lakh students with arrears ranging from one paper to 66 papers, including 30,000 students at four university campuses, including the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) and the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chromepet.
It was estimated that two additional lakh students would have graduated from Anna University this year if the GO had been implemented.
Some principals have asked the university to give students an extra opportunity to clear up arrears.
"Barring those in the final year all students have been promoted, the former having taken part in the examinations for the April/May semester in September. But students with arrears are only getting one chance this year. The university should give them an additional chance," said B Chidambararajan, head of SRM Valliammai Engineering College.
"As per the court order, all state universities should conduct arrears exams for students and report results. Other state universities should also conduct arrears without delay," said Anna University's former Vice-Chancellor E Balagurusamy.
