Anna University said in a statement that it had spent INR 37.11 crores for conducting the exams and declaring the result for around 4 lakh students.

The University had spent the amount on all aspects except for the valuation of answer scripts. Each answer paper costs INR 126, hence each student was collected INR 150 for each subject.

The examination process had started much earlier before the cancellation order had been issued by the state government.

The University made a statement against a batch of pleas moved by the students seeking to restrain the university from demanding fees for canceled exams.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh accepted the pleas on August 31, 2020, and directed the university to announce the pending results whether the exam fees have been paid or not. The court also asks the university to explain actual exam expenditures.

The university claimed that it would suffer a major financial crisis if the students did not pay the fees for the canceled exams.

If the students were not willing to remit the exam fees, it would be taken as they are not willing to appear for the exam.

If any excess amount was collected above the cost of the answer script, then the amount will be remitted to the university account, said the Registrar.
