What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“My penchant to give to the society through what I have learnt keeps me connected to this sector”

I joined teaching out of my own choice and served as a professor for over 35 years. Now, as an administrator, I’m trying to contribute to the sector that I have imbibed all those years. The feeling of being able to contribute out of my experience keeps me fuelled. Editing research articles in international journals, reviewing papers, and guiding research projects granted by authorities like UGC, AICTE, MHRD, CSIR, etc. help me remain connected with the core academics.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“Leadership is something one cultivates over the years with experience in one’s trade”

A leader should bear in mind that one has to have a sense of belongingness towards one’s team and a sense of ownership regarding setbacks. At critical junctures, the leader should come forward and re-establish the faith on and of his team. I believe in leading from the front with examples and ensuring that my team members have very little concern. When there is an instance of fault or failure, I take ownership of the case and come to the front to assure people that it is a matter of chance, and next time my team and I will use our minds and sinews in a better way to harvest positive outcomes.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your university?

“As an established brand, it is not a daunting task for us to market ourselves”

Ours is an established brand fathered by GD Birla Ji, the Indian industries' grandsire, and marketing is not an issue as we have never lost track of our core values, vision, and mission. With a vast alumni corpus spread across the globe, we have always been committed to foster scientific and technical understanding among our students who act as our brand ambassadors. The administrative structure maintains its sanctity by ensuring everyone’s involvement and making every process transparent. All this travels far and wide in society through word of mouth and creates faith for us in people's minds.

“TIT&S has always made endeavours to fall in line with global practices. Interactions with foreign counterparts in terms of pedagogy and research facilitate the smooth flow of academic processes. Thus a student feels at home and finds a pleasant atmosphere for study and research.”

How does the curriculum of the Technological Institute of Textile and Sciences ensure the best practice of industry?

“We make sure to edit and omit our curriculum periodically to enhance the learning experience of students”

The curriculum is periodically reviewed by aboard studies in consultation with experts from all industries, and obsoleteness in syllabi is eliminated by incorporating updates. Our alumni play a crucial role in this area. Being present in almost all industries, they help us keep abreast of the changes to fall in line with the latest modus operandi followed on the floor. Our curriculum's focus is on making our students industry-ready, and we achieve this by involving our industry stakeholders in curriculum development.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the College and the students are?

“My responsibility is to ensure smooth functioning and continuous development of the institute”

I believe my roles are multiple, and all are crucial. In addition to being the head of the family, I am also the mentor of my subordinates and students. My job is to ensure my students achieve their desired targets and have overall development to survive in the global market. I take ample interest in understanding the behavior of my students.

What do you think should be the College’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“We want to grow and develop our programs that align with global market trends”

TIT&S has prolonged its sustenance in the educational scenario of the country by periodically reviewing its educational programs. The institute's top priority is to initiate new programs in compliance with the market demand and discard the programs that are not viable from a marketing standpoint. Accordingly, our blueprint for new programs is ready, and we will reveal things methodically shortly.

“We recently signed an MOU with the n+i network of institutes in France, Technical University of Liberec, Woolmark Australia, and Textile Institute of Manchester. Some more collaborative MOUs are in the pipeline.”

What are the challenges you see for higher education in general and for the Technological Institute of Textile and Sciences specifically?

“The indecisiveness of the students makes them incapable of taking wise career decisions”

The biggest challenge in the higher education sector in our country is the indecisiveness of our students. They do not decide their career as per their capability and go by peers and parents' advice. Consequently, at the end of a particular program, we don’t get the desired workforce as students tend to change their trades instead of joining it full time.
