Chemistry is an incredibly fascinating field of study. Chemistry is essential for meeting our basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, health, energy, and clean air, water, and soil. Chemical technologies enrich our quality of life in numerous ways by providing new solutions to problems in health, materials, and energy usage. Thus, studying chemistry is useful in preparing us for the real world.

Chemistry is interesting and creative

Our world is made out of atoms, molecules, and ions. Their behavior determines the properties of the substances we encounter in our daily lives: their structure, color, smell, and how they interact with each other. Knowledge in Chemistry will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation of the materials building our world. Chemists creatively use this knowledge. A career in chemistry will allow you to resolve some of these basic problems or create something entirely new. Therefore, in Chandigarh University, our curriculum in the B.Sc program is designed to meet all the necessary requirements.

A glimpse of B. Sc Program at Chandigarh University

B. Sc Honors in Chemistry provide a backbone in all the traditional branches of Physical, Inorganic, Organic and Green/ Analytical chemistry.

In semester 1st and 2nd: There will be the introduction to fundamental aspects of Organic and Inorganic chemistry in 1st semester. In the 2nd semester, mainly physical and organic chemistry will be discussed. Students will learn the laboratory and practical techniques needed for the later years of the course. Students have to choose an elective paper on applied chemistry as well. Additional papers covering – English Communication, Environment, Waste, and Disaster Management will enhance their chemistry skills. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is mandatory to qualify from 2nd semester up to the 5th semester of the three-year degree program.

In semester 3rd and 4th: Physical, Inorganic, and Organic chemistry will be taught in 3rd semester. Physical, Inorganic, and Organic chemistry will also be covered in semester 4th. The experimental work will be continued throughout the session to develop theoretical knowledge and practice as well. Additional papers covering – Basics of Marketing, Logic in Organic Synthesis, Analysis of Spectral Data will help them enhance their skills in chemistry. Entrepreneurship, Social, and Professional Ethics are to be run under self-learning mode.

In semester 5th and 6th: Students will undertake a more advanced study of the inorganic, physical, analytical, and organic chemistry, given a choice to choose optional papers in areas of Environmental Chemistry, Green Chemistry, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, and many more with the electives. Institutional/Industrial training of 6 weeks to be completed during summer vacation after the 4th Semester for evaluation in the 5th Semester. Social Internship of 30 Hrs in the 5th Semester and MOOCs in the 6th Semester is mandatory for every student.

Syllabus sync with the Industry demands

The course has been designed to have insight in almost all the aspects of chemistry and to build a solid foundation in the subject to choose a career in industry/academics or research. Also, the course provides a good measure of flexibility and gives choices to select electives. The syllabus very well covers the areas like Environmental chemistry, polymer chemistry, drugs, industrially important chemicals, Green Chemistry which are in demand in the industry.

Chemistry skills are in demand

Chemistry science overlaps with diverse fields, such as physics, mathematics, biology, medicine, and environmental sciences. Chemistry is sometimes referred to as the central science because it connects so many aspects of modern science. Acquiring knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes' properties can give a deep understanding of biological processes or materials' physical properties. As a result, knowledge of chemistry is proven to be useful in many fields. In a world in which it is less and less common to spend an entire career in the same job, the flexibility gained during your chemistry education will prove to be an advantage.

Excellent Remunerations

Acquiring a degree in chemistry opens many doors for graduates for a variety of educational or professional opportunities. From chemical engineer to the lecturer to pharmacologist to chemist, career opportunities are vast. Chemistry professionals value experience to gain a hands-on skillset. It creates a myriad of opportunities for graduates to study and practice chemistry across industries. A chemistry degree can give you access to a high-paying role in healthcare, manufacturing, tech, and bio-tech. Even if you don’t wind up in a chemistry role, this degree makes you a uniquely-equipped employee and gives you a competitive edge when applying for roles.

Industry beckons with high salaries

That so many young scientists head into the industry is due not only to the salaries but also to rocky qualification paths, uncertain career prospects, and the often short-term contracts in public research institutions. Only a handful manage to gain one of the few professorships or rise to the top at an extramural research institution.

The Opportunity to Innovate

From renewable fuels to creating the materials for tomorrow's technology, chemistry plays a pivotal role in advancing the world that we live in. The innovative products of chemistry lead to cutting-edge advancements—applied technology in medical devices, aerospace, computing, cars, fuels, and more. That’s what chemistry enables: technological advancements that drive innovation, create jobs, and enhance safety in our everyday lives.

If you have considered all of the perks of working in Chemistry and have decided that it is the career for you, your next step is to pursue sufficient education.
