Dr. Shrihari Prakash Honwad is the President of SPSU, Udaipur. He has a rich experience of 30 years in academics and administration. He has been associated with several prestigious academic institutions in the capacity of Assistant Professor and HOD. He is an active member of the advisory board, making significant contributions to the curriculum development.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“An understanding of what the Education Sector should be doing and where it should move”

The best way to be a lifelong learner is through the teaching profession. At heart, I believe in the phrase, once a teacher, always a teacher. Academicians' performance is always enhanced by their eagerness to learn more. I have always taken various academic lessons to remain updated in this sector. This keeps me closer to the younger generation, their aspirations, their value systems and their current likes/dislikes. 

What is your philosophy of leadership?

"To achieve a common goal with the students' interests in mind"

Academicians are natural leaders of their class. In the class, it is the endeavour of every teacher that every one of the students attains the desired learning outcomes. My philosophy of leadership is essentially democratic in nature. In my experience, this ensures success. Thus, all of us are collectively responsible and, if a crisis arises, it is attempted to be handled successfully.

What can an inbound student gain from studying at SPSU?

“Flexibility, outcome-based learning, and hands-on experience for students”

In SPSU, we place a lot of emphasis on outcome based learning. Our industry network shall provide hands-on training experience for inbound students. Most importantly, SPSU is very welcoming of multicultural, multidisciplinary, and multi-ethnic mix on campus. We have programs that appeal globally and industry connect that should really be beneficial to any overseas student.

How does the curriculum of SPSU ensure the best practice of industry?

"An internal Quality Assurance Cell continuously monitors the system's performance and processes"

We are a NAAC-accredited university, which means we follow very good practices on campus. The Quality Assurance Cell guides us to continuously improve our performances. In addition, we have our international collaborating universities, through which we keep getting exposed to the next best practices. These are some of the ways in addition to the Advisory and Academic Councils that continuously help us in improvements. Best practices of the recruiting Industry is ensured by Industry participation in both curriculum development and its delivery. Our industry connection and rapport with our recruiters would go a long way in ensuring the currency of our curriculum.

What do you see as the University’s greatest strengths?

Our greatest strengths are our dedicated faculty, alumni and a distinct infrastructure. Additionally, our industry network ensures a great placement record for our students. The most important strength I believe is our student-centric attitude. Our students who keep all of us energised and young are perhaps the greatest strength.

What are some of the biggest challenges for higher education in the current era?

“Efforts towards retraining at every level and implementation of NEP 2020”

In general, implementation of the New Education Policy would be one of the biggest challenges juxtaposed to Industry 4.0. With the increasing online learning and certifications, physical universities would compete to be affordable. The only advantage Universities have today is imparting technical machine handling skills, life skills and teamwork. As the virtual interactions become lifelike, the virtual world is going to be competing with the real world.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth?

“Students must remain calm and use their judgement to choose a future path”

In the face of the confusion created by information explosion and unlimited choices, it is important to remain focussed. There are no paths that get you easy success. It pimples that struggle is part of life and that is what makes life worth living. The knowledge invariants do not change and without hesitation acquire them. Focus on learning outcomes, rather than certificates or degrees.
