Calcutta University commences Online Final-Sem Examinations 2020; Check Details Here


Calcutta University has started the Final Semester Examinations on 1 October 2020, through Online mode. Officials have remarked that the exams are conducted smoothly.

In the midst of COVID-19 situation and the travel restrictions, the government of West Bengal has initiated the step to conduct the Final Semester Examinations for Under-graduate and Postgraduate courses from Thursday onwards. Calcutta University has started the examinations in Digital mode with three time slots assigned to the colleges.

Vice- Chancellor Sonali Chakraborty informed that examinations took place for the 104 subjects affiliated with 152 colleges at 10 AM with students appearing the exam from their home. 

She further explained that the exam was held for 2 hours and the students received the question papers 15 minutes  before the exam starts. There are three slots distributed for conducting the exams, i.e. 10 AM-12PM, 12 AM-2 PM and 2 PM-4 PM.

Each candidate was again given a half an hour window to submit the answers in PDF attachment and mail them back to the college authorities. For Postgraduate level examinations, 68 subjects were evaluated in the same manner as above.

Education Officers have observed that this will ensure the safety of the students along with their families. The VC said that the virtual mode exams are being held smoothly and no complaints have been received yet.

But many students have complained that the question paper carrying 100 marks is not justified to complete within 2 hours of time. To this, the Exam Committee replied that a multiple-choice Question was made to answer within the time-limit given to the students.

Around 1.5 Lakhs students appeared for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate exams virtually in Calcutta University. Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University, conducted the Online Examinations in two time slots, i.e. 11.30 AM - 1.30 PM and 2.30 PM - 4.30 PM. 1800 students from Arts field and 1200 students from Science field attended the test from Jadavpur University. He further added that the exams will get over after 8 October, 2020.

Many students misread the instructions to input the correct email id, where the questions will be mailed, this was resolved once they were ordered to type in the correct email id. VC of North Bengal University Subiresh Bhattacharya said that some of the candidates sent their  hard copy of the answer sheets to the designated exam centre, 30 minutes after the exams were over.

Education Minister Partha Chatterjee had on Tuesday asked power utilities, Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) and West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL), to ensure no difficulty was faced by the students during examination.

By the order of the Supreme Court last month, the exams were to be completed by 30 September. Looking into the current situation the apex court observed that problems may arise to complete the final exams on short notice. UGC was informed of this and resolved the issue by accepting the proposal of the Higher Education department to conduct the virtual examinations from 1 October - 18 October.
