Calcutta University Online Exam Duration Reduced

Calcutta University has decided to allow 30 minutes to download the question papers and upload the answer scripts for the Semester Terminal and Final Year Exams.

This was one of several modalities decided by CU, two days after receiving a letter from the University Grants Commission, which, in no uncertain terms, informed them of their disapproval of giving students 24 hours to submit answer scripts.

On Friday, the CU officials held a meeting of the Faculty Council, followed by a meeting of the UG and the PG Board of Studies, where Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee sent a letter to the UGC.

As per the resolution, the UGC Guidelines of 29 April stated that the duration of the terminal semester or final year examinations may be reduced from three hours to two hours.

A senior teacher said, "The VC pointed out that, as per the revised UGC guidelines of July 6, the exams can be conducted offline, online, or blended (online + offline) modes."

"As a result, CU has the option of conducting theoretical examinations based on multiple-choice questions or using OMR sheets in three modes. If the institution evaluates its students by giving more than the specified time, it will be categorised as an assignment-based assessment, "explained the teacher The Board further decided to strictly follow the UGC guidelines.

CU called a meeting of all affiliated college principals at Rajabazar Science College on Monday to discuss the details of the terminal semester exam.

The sudden change in modality has led to jitters among the college principals.

Students in the city are unlikely to face any problems with internet connectivity.

But what about the people who live in the suburbs and villages? They may study at a college in Kolkata but live in remote areas.

They will face challenges due to time-bound examinations.

Internet connectivity will be slow, and even many will have to take the exams from local internet cafes because few students have the luxury of using a laptop.

Also, we can't expect candidates to write the exams on their smartphones, "said the principal of the college.
