COVID-19 India: IIT Guwahati-backed Startup Develops Sanitizer Tunnels

IIT Guwahati incubated startup, Vixudha Bio Product along with Oasis Fabrications have come up with a sanitizer tunnel that can effectively disinfect full body or even larger objects.

The project was headed by Dr Mihir Kumar Purkait, Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Head of Centre of Environment and Dr Prabir Kumar Saha, Department of Chemical Engineering of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati

This disinfectant tunnel is basically a chamber to disinfect the full body and in this way decontaminates a person. Deployed with high-pressure nozzles, it splashes the disinfectant as fine mists within the chamber.

The fluid is sprayed for a set time of 7 seconds, during which it breaks through protein structures of microorganisms, killing them eventually.

When a person enters the tunnel, it disinfects the entire body except for sensitive areas like eyes and mouth. The tunnel developed by IIT Guwahati is unlike others as it uses a nozzle which uniformly spreads the fluid on a person’s body.

In these trying times amid the coronavirus outbreak in India, every individual is exposed to a host of viruses and bacteria. The funnel will not only disinfect just hands and feet but the full body. Thus, this tunnel bears the potential to protect people not only from Coronavirus but other viruses and bacteria as well.

The research team has estimated the operation cost as Rs 2 for each person, requiring 25 ml of fluid per cycle. Any standard quality disinfectant can be used in the tunnel.

Dimensions of the disinfectant tunnel are 3 feet⨯2 feet ⨯8 feet which can be easily installed in confined places. This tunnel can be highly beneficial for hospitals, schools, colleges, market places, cinema halls and malls.
