Engineering Seats Cut Down by 2152 in KTU Affiliated Colleges 

The colleges affiliated to KTU Kerala have seen a drop in engineering seats this year. A total of 2,152 undergraduate engineering seats have been decreased. As per the statements made by the university official, there were a total of 47,268 BTech seats last year which has now reduced to 45,116 seats.

According to university officials, there are numerous reasons behind this fall in the number of undergraduate engineering seats. As per the university sources, few colleges affiliated to AKTU have decided that they will not admit new students as the number of students admitted to these colleges last year was pretty less in number. 

Some other institutes have either reduced the number of batches or have surrendered certain branches of engineering because of indifferent response to such branches. Among such engineering branches, Information Technology is at the top. There are numerous other branches such as Electronics that a large number of institutions, especially those included in the self-financing sector have surrendered this year.

AKTU: Past Trend of Engineering Admission

The fall in the number of B.Tech seats is likely to have a little impact as nearly 50% of the BTech seats remained vacant in 2019. However, there was a marginal increase in the number of candidates registered for admission to BTech courses in the AKTU affiliated colleges. Around 25,500 seats were filled in the AKTU affiliated colleges in 2018 which has marginally increased by 8 percent with the number of filled seats crossing over 27,000 in 2019. 

With a large number of self-financing institutes struggling to survive, there has been a notable improvement in the academic performance of some of the engineering colleges in the private sector. 

This year, over 71,000 candidates have appeared for the KEAM entrance test held on July 16, 2020. Out of these 71,000 candidates, a total of around 53,000 candidates found place in the eligibility list. 

KEAM is a state-level entrance exam which is conducted for admission to Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary, Forestry and Pharmacy programs. KEAM is conducted in two sessions for Paper 1 and Paper 2. Candidates seeking admission to the BPharma course need to qualify Paper 1 only. The trial allotment list for KEAM 2020 was declared by CEE Kerala on October 4, 2020. The first phase of allotment will be released on October 7, 2020 at 9 PM. The Self-financing colleges expect a considerable increase in the demand for engineering seats this year because of the COVID-19 scare and other restrictions imposed by the Govt. could induce parents and students to opt for the nearby institutes.
