On July 26, IIT Bombay released the GATE 2021 exam schedules which included two new streams to be added in the curriculum of the exam, which will be held in the month of February 2021.
It is being expected that the inclusion of Environmental Science and Humanities and Social Science in GATE 2021 will help the students in widening their scope of higher studies.

In the post-COVID scenario, recognizing the global environmental concern where issues of sustainability have become more important, the market is expecting an urgent need of Environmental Engineers and Scientists to collaborate to progress in the path of sustainable developments.
Deepankar Choudhury, Organising Chairman and institute Chair Professor of IIT Bombay has said that the environment has now become one of the major fields in the area of research, both in India and abroad. Thus, the inclusion of these subjects will open a wide opportunity for the students to shape their career.

Suparna Mukherjee, Head of Environmental Science and Engineering Department, IIT Bombay too agreed to the point and said that earlier the B.Tech/B.E Engineering students had to do a lot of extra learning which were not at all necessary and thus, led to poor marks. But now it’s time for them to improve their GATE scores.
Prof. Choudhury also said that the decision was not an overnight process. With the Supreme Court of India mandating that one course of Environmental Studies is needed to be taught at the institutions and the IIT students need to have one such subject in their curriculum. This initiated the need for a separate subject for the GATE 2021 examination.

He also informed that the questions will be set based on the overall B.Tech curriculum in the field and the samples will be made available by mid-August 2020.
Third year B.Tech/B.Sc students can take the exam as a trial and their scores will be valid for 3 years.
For the time being, 150 seats will be available for the M.Tech courses Admission in Environmental Science throughout the country including IITs.
