IISc Appoints Professor Govindan Rangarajan as New Director, with effect from August 1, 2020


Indian Institute of Science has formally appointed Professor Govindan Rangarajan as the new director of the institute. 

The new director of the Indian Institute of Science will exercise his powers with effect from August 1, 2020, after obtaining approval from the President of India.

Professor Govindan Rangarajan will precede Professor Anurag Kumar who is completing his term as director of IISc on July 31, 2020.

The news was announced by IISc Bangalore Twitter handle which said, “We are very pleased to announce that Prof. Govindan Rangarajan has been appointed as the new Director of IISc, with effect from 1 August 2020. The current Director, Prof. Anurag Kumar, will superannuate and complete his term on 31 July 2020.”

As per a statement issued by IISc, Prof. Rangarajan obtained an Integrated MSc (Hons.) degree from the BITS Pilani, and a Ph from the University of Maryland, College Park. 

Later, Prof. Rangarajan worked at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, USA, before returning to India in 1992. 

Moreover, prior to his current appointment, he was the Chair, Division of Interdisciplinary Research at IISc comprising 10 departments and centres. 

On being appointed as the new director of IISc, Prof. Rangarajan said that it is an honour and privilege for him to be appointed as the next Director of IISc.
