IIT Delhi, Kharagpur move higher up in THE Asia University Rankings 2020


The Indian Institutes of Technology in Delhi and Kharagpur climbed in the 2020 edition of a pan-Asia ranking of universities, with the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, maintaining its high position as the highest-ranked Indian higher education provider among others.

Times Higher Education (THE) announced the Asia University Rankings 2020 on Wednesday, declaring a total of 489 institutions from 30 countries/regions. There is an increase of 7 institutions from 2019, totaling to 56 qualifying Indian institutions. THE ranks the institutions by their performance in five important aspects: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income. 
The Indian Institute of Science is ranked 36th but dropped seven places from the 2019 ranking. IIT Kharagpur on the other hand climbed up 17 ranks to 59th. IIT Delhi also progressed up 24 ranks to 67th and IIT Ropar made it into the top 50 on its debut in the ranking at 47th rank.

There are 4 other Indian institutions that have ranked in the top 100, making this India’s best performance since the 2016 rankings. The institutions include the Institute of Chemical Technology at 92nd, IIT Indore at 55th, IIT Roorkee at 83rd, and IIT Bombay at 69th. 

India has become the 3rd most represented country following Japan at 110 institutions and mainland China at 81 institutions.
