IIT Guwahati: 291 Research Projects on Various Topics Going On, Boasts Director T G Sitharam on 22nd Convocation


IIT-Guwahati is carrying out 291 research projects worth INR 437 crore on a variety of topics, said Institute Director T G Sitharam on Tuesday. 

Addressing the 22nd virtual convocation of IIT-G here, the director said that a total of 153 new consulting projects had been undertaken by IIT-Guwahati and earned INR 11.27 crore as fees for these services.

"291 research projects are underway with a total sanctioned value of approximately INR 437 crore.

In the reporting year, we received 131 new projects with a sanctioned value of INR 183 crore, "Sitharam said.

The research dimension of IIT-Guwahati is expanding significantly and the same is now reflected in the multiple collaborative research funded by industry, he added.

"A total of 153 new consulting projects have been carried out over the year. The total value of consulting projects undertaken during this year is INR 10.76 crore and INR 11.27 crore for all consultants," Sitharam said.

Mr Sitharam said that 2,112 research papers have been published in international and national journals in the last year.

"The institute applied for 31 patents in 201920," said T G Sitharam.

288 PhDs awarded during Convocation

During the meeting, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through a videoconference, a total of 1,803 students received their degrees.

This includes 288 PhD scholars, 828 postgraduate students and 687 graduate students.

Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for the Academic Year 2019-20 was awarded to Tushar Yadav (Civil Engineering), while Shubham Goel (Computer Science and Engineering) won the Indian President's Gold Medal.

The students were awarded their 3D models for the first time in their history due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only a few senior management members gathered at the campus auditorium.
