IIT Roorkee Launches Anti-Microbial FaceMasks To Counter COVID-19

A research team at IIT Roorkee has come up with a nano-coating system to develop PPEs and facemasks for preventing transmission of coronavirus.

As per press release by IIT Roorkee, the coating can kill pathogens within 10 to 15 minutes.

Facemasks are considered integral to PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) including gloves, gowns and eye protection for frontline workers. The nano-coating system provided additional protection from COVID-19 by cutting down transmission risks.

The research has been conducted by a 4-membered team including lead, Prof. Naveen K Navani, Department of Biotechnology and Center of Nanotechnology, along with Mr Ajmal Hussain, Mr Pardeep Kumar and Dr Arun Beniwal.

The formulation developed by the team is projected to be highly effective in killing pathogens as it includes clinical pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157 and Staphylococcus aureus.

The formulation consists of plant-based antimicrobials and silver nanoparticles that create synergistic effect while killing pathogens.

The system also includes a combination of more than 3 antimicrobial compounds for its formulation. These can be coated on different surfaces for protection against the virus.

The phytochemicals used in the formulation have the potential to kill viruses, which is why it can inhibit the growth of Coronavirus as well.
