IIT Roorkee organizes Online Conclave to promote Sanskrit, observing NEP 2020


September 30, 2020: An online Sanskrit conclave named 'Significance and Future of Sanskrit Studies and Allied Areas' has been organized by IIT Roorkee faculty members and students from various institutes across the country. 

Director of IIT Roorkee stated that The Sanskrit Conclave is an effort to bring the researchers and institutes on a single platform to promote the Sanskrit language. The efforts are needed from several academies and disciplines to bring out the wisdom of Sanskrit literature.

The aim of the initiative “SAMARPANAM” is to encourage students about the study of Sanskrit disciplines in the country and the significance of the ancient language. 

Earlier, the Indian Institute of Technology (Indore) had also taken an initiative similar to IIT Roorkee and introduced science and math courses in ancient Sanskrit texts. This was initiated to expose the present generation to the ancient language. 

The courses are divided into two parts where the first party's main focus was on developing Sanskrit understanding in students. The second part consists of concepts related to the subject in ancient Sanskrit text.

On the initiative taken by IIT Roorkee, the Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said, “It is a matter of pride that the premier educational institutions such as IIT Roorkee have taken a commendable initiative to promote Sanskrit in an endeavor to foster constructive dialogue among the stakeholders”.

He added, "India had been a renowned educational hub in giving birth to premier universities such as Nalanda and Takshshila. Such initiatives will go a long way in fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat and New India".

The group aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 that reinforces the commitment towards instilling appreciation towards Indian culture and heritage through tech-driven innovation, the Education Minister stated.

Dr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman, AICTE, quoted that the Sanskrit language has been an ancient part of Indian Culture and Heritage. Language is one of the oldest languages in the world. Encouraging Communications and studies in Sanskrit languages in India will develop the nation as a literary hub for the globe.

In realizing the potential of the ancient language, fostering a cross-disciplinary approach in diverse subjects will help in the long run, said the AICTE Chairman.

IIT Roorkee: Other Initiative Taken in the Year 2020

Recently, IIT Roorkee collaborated with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to take up research and development projects related to standardization and conformity assessment. The research process will be conducted on a nation and international basis by the university.

The university is also working with Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) to generate frontier technologies in the field of agricultural research. The collaboration of IIT Roorkee and OUAT’s main focus is to create new opportunities for agricultural research and resolve the issues faced by farmers of India.

IIT Roorkee launched certification courses for its upcoming batch of 2021 on the leading online learning platform Coursera. Courses like Machine Learning, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence will be available for the youth.
