Jamia Millia Islamia Secures First Position in Central Universities Category in the Government Rankings


Ministry of Education has released the list for top central universities in India in which Jamia Millia Islamia has secured the top spot.

A total of 40 central universities were ranked in which Jamia Millia Islamia secured the first position with a grading score of 90% compared to 83% of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Arunachal Pradesh, 82% of JNU and 78% of Aligarh Muslim University.

The scores were granted on the basis of parameters that were fixed in 2019-20, under a Memorandum of Understanding.

Earlier this year, the varsity secured 10th position under the ‘University’ category of NIRF 2020. While in the overall category, the varsity secured 16th spot with a score of 59.85.

Basis of Evaluation for Ranking Central Universities

The evaluation for ranking was based on parameters which included annual student intake in UG, PG, PhD and MPhil and student diversity, which included the percentage of female students, students from other states and foreign students.

Moreover, other parameters like faculty quality and strength which included student-teacher ratio, teacher vacancy, visiting faculty, etc., were also taken into account while evaluating.

Apart from these, the central universities were also assessed on the number of students placed through campus interviews, and the number of students who qualified in NET, GATE, etc.

Vice-Chancellor Stressed the Importance of Achievement

On the achievement of the varsity, Vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar said that this was very significant because the varsity had gone through some challenging times in the recent past.

She also highlighted that the varsity was able to achieve this milestone due to its “high-quality teaching, relevant and focused research of the highest quality and improved perception of the university.”
