Jadavpur University, Presidency University may hold admission without entrance examinations

With the coronavirus pandemic aggravating in West Bengal, and a notification from the state government to the state-aided universities to begin admissions from 10 August, uncertainty looms over the entrance examinations to the undergraduate courses in Jadavpur University and Presidency University.

In Jadavpur University (JU), teachers in the arts and sciences departments have been instructed to devise a formula that can be used instead of admission tests.

The faculty council meetings will be held in the upcoming week, after which the matter will be referred to the admissions committee of the university. It is probable that JU will start distributing admission forms in August.

Many suggestions are being put forward by the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association. Among the suggestions being offered is to include a candidate’s performance in class 10 to determine merit, since many class 12 papers have been cancelled.

A JU official said that though admission tests are necessary, it would be impossible to give them this year. Furthermore, many candidates who apply to JU come from remote places without stable Internet access, meaning that it would not be possible for them to take examinations online.

In Presidency University, officials said that the decision to hold entrance examinations, whether online or offline, announcing fresh dates or returning to the old method of marks-based admission will be decided by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board, which holds the tests.

The Presidency University Bachelor’s Degree Entrance Test, which was scheduled for April, has been postponed.

By 10 August, however, both JU and Presidency University will decide when the admissions should begin.
