On Thursday, the High Court of Karnataka instructed the Visvesaraya Technological University (VTU) to reconsider the feasibility of holding an online examination as an option, in addition to an off-line examination for the students, while at least trying the examination at a special opportunity.
VTU was asked to take note of the suggestions made by the students and also, to the extent possible, to provide advice and advice from experts on technical requirements and to make appropriate decisions.
"University should keep in mind that the final exam would have a major impact on the future prospects of students. It is expected that all student grievances will be examined with all seriousness," said Justice Sunil Dutt Yadav.
"It should be noted that consideration should be given to the interests of students in any decision taken. In these times of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is expected that whatever technological solutions are available will be explored," said the bench.
The bench added that "As the current exam is due to be completed by September 15, 2020, the time available to the university to reconsider will also be sufficient."
The University shall record its decision on the next date of the hearing on September 25, 2020.
The Court also noted the State Government's submission that the SOPs applicable to the KCET examination would also be followed in the conduct of these examinations.
The Court also directed the appointment of a Grievance Redressal Officer to deal with the student complaints regarding the examinations.
"The contact details of the government official designated as a grievance officer shall be posted on the VTU website to enable students to contact and submit their grievances," the Court said.
In a petition filed by students of the Bangalore Institute of Technology, the Court passed an order seeking an online option for examinations, in addition to the offline method.
Yesterday, following the submissions of Advocate Bhargav Bhat to the petitioners, the Court asked the VTU to give an answer as to why online examinations can not be held when viva was done online.
