Abdul Kalam Technological University has decided to do away with all junior semester examinations for the engineering course for the time being, as Kerala faces a serious health emergency in the midst of the pandemic.
The academic council of KTU, which met online on 11 July, could not decide whether the university should extend the same courtesy to the students of the final semester.
Earlier, the university had postponed the B.Tech examination.
As for the students in the lower semesters, their marks will be decided by taking into account their Semester Point Grade Average in their previous semesters. Following the CBSE model, the council decided that if a student was not satisfied, they could take the examination later when the university started functioning normally.
However, the council was divided over the use of this approach for an institution-level online examination for the final semester students.
There were suggestions that the final semester students- considering the strange circumstances they were set to face as jobseekers during the pandemic- should be given the option of taking college-level online examinations or their scores be calculated in the same manner as that of the lower semester students.
However, a section of the academic council opposed this proposal. They said that there could be no alternative to the conventional mode of examination for the final semester students. Due to the deadlock, the matter has been referred to the university syndicate.
