Maharashtra: Non-Teaching Staff on Strike, State Universities Defer Final Year Exam 2020

Four state universities in Maharashtra have deferred final year exams in view of ongoing strike by non-teaching staff for not implementing the seventh pay commission for them.

On Tuesday September 29, 2020, BAMU in Aurangabad, Kaviyatri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University in Jalgaon, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) in Nagpur and SGBAU, Amravati issued circular stating that the exams have been delayed for the final year students and final dates will be announced later.

The pen-down strike officially started on September 24, 2020 and since then the strike continued. Exams that were expected to be held from October 1 will now be deferred. A new timetable will be released soon by the University.

University of Mumbai decided to conduct decentralised exams by giving each college the choice to conduct exams as per their schedule. This was granted as long as they followed the examination guidelines.

Meanwhile, students were assured that they did not have to worry as MU affiliated colleges are to conduct exams in clusters and no exams will be deferred.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic and eventual nation-wide lockdown implemented since March this year, final year exams have been postponed multiple times.

After receiving several petitions from different states seeking permission to cancel final year exams and promote students based on their performance in the previous semester.

However, the Supreme court has made it clear that final year students have to appear for the term end examination compulsorily in order to get promoted.

Following the order of the Supreme court in September, the state minister for higher and technical education, Uday Samant announced that all final year examinations will be held online and in Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) format.

Online exams for final year students were supposed to take place from October 1 and October 31, 2020 and results for the same will be declared in the first week of November.
