MAKAUT announces results of graduating students without holding exams

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) has announced the results of graduating students without giving any examination to its students.

In doing so, MAKAUT has become the first state university to promote its final-year students without holding an examination. MAKAUT announced the results on 20 July.

The controller of examinations of the university said that 75 percent marks had been given on continuous internal assessments, while five percent had been given on the basis of attendance in the final semester. 20 percent was given on home assignments in the same semester.

The Higher Education Department had suggested to universities that they assess graduating engineering students by giving 80 percent weightage to the best of the total of previous semester, mid-semester or internal assessment results, and 20 percent to home assignments.

The university only evaluated students on their performances in their final semester. No weightage was given to previous semesters.

A B.Tech student in the eighth semester had appeared for three internal assessments. Two assessments. Two assessments were done before the lockdown; one was held online during the lockdown. Affiliated colleges had made alternative arrangements for students who had connectivity issues.

The government had advised universities to publish results by 31 July.

Later, the Higher Education Department wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC), wherein it expressed reservations about the latter’s directive to “compulsorily” give an examination to graduating students by September by either online, or offline, or blended mode.

The vice-chancellor of MAKAUT was among the state university vice-chancellors who wrote to the UGC objecting to its unpopular directive.

If there is a discrepancy in the results, students have to contact their colleges within seven days of the publication of results.

Calcutta University will publish results by 31 July.

Jadavpur University will upload results by 31 July, while Presidency University will do so by this week. The latter assessed students by giving equal weightage to previous performance and internal assessment. Though this was different from the Higher Education Department directive, the department did not object.
